Holding Court

I was not really expecting a great deal from this book - I thought it would be one of those books that are interesting to read but you'd forget about a week after you've finished it. I was totally wrong.As a tennis fan this was an excellent read. It is well written and easy to read. The author (Chris Gorringe) comes across as a straightforward man who was lucky enough to have the dream job for nearly three decades. He takes us through some of the changes and controversies that have impacted Wimbledon over that time - playing on the middle Sunday, John McEnroe, equal prizemoney, the Olympics and putting a roof on Centre Court.His story is told in a simple and understated way - Gorringe doesn't appear to be one of those administrators who needs to be in the limelight. Rather, he has an interesting story to tell and he does it well.Recommended for all tennis fans.

Chris Gorringe was Wimbledon's "CEO" from 1978-2005. If you're a tennis fan, you will surely enjoy reading his story. The book has a number of humorous tales as well as serious challenges that he had to deal with.There is quite a lot of English history [sporting and otherwise], as well as personal history from the Chairman of the All England Club. The Championships, as they call it, is the oldest lawn tennis tournament in the world. Putting on a successful event like this takes a lot of teamwork, and it helped that Mr Gorringe was a well-liked fellow, who got along with the many people who helped out in running the tournament. His job was not easy, as you'll discover.If you love tennis, then Wimbledon should be very special to you. i hope you enjoy the book as much as I did.
