RTI from All Sides: What Every Teacher Needs to Know

Worth the read
Mary Howard does a good job of explaining RTI and offers practical suggestions for implementing it. Her book is informative and readable. She references Richard Allington's work on the same topic. I had read his book previously. Between the two books I have a better understanding of what is needed to help all readers, not just struggling ones. I was happy to find that many of us are already doing the most important thing and that is to have kids read, read, read. Now if we can only convince administrators to allow us the time. I have shared both these books with my colleagues.

Excellent resource!
I don't usually review books that I've read--especially professional ones, but this book (along with Richard Allington's What Really Matters in Response to Intervention) was terrific. I'm rereading it at this time and taking notes to share with my colleagues. Mary Howard is a dynamic speaker and writer with lots of experience and research to back up her claims. The book is very easy to read and understand and says all of the important-though not necessarily popular-things about making sure our students are successful. I would highly recommend this for teachers, principals and book study groups.

Balanced View
I've been receiving the hard sell on RTI in my school, and I was looking for a more balanced and honest review of the process and theory of RTI before throwing myself willy-nilly into the RTI fray. I'm really glad I did. After reading this book, I was able to pull back on the reins of those wanting to jump all in from the get go by asking good questions during staff meetings. I've been teaching long enough to have seen the "cart before the horse" model of program adoption happen too many times. It gets exhausting, frustrating, and OLD. I highly recommend this book to anyone in a school district looking at RTI. There's definitely some pitfalls to be avoided, and this book highlights both the positive and the negative very clearly.

Our school is just beginning to implement RTI. After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of how our program could/should look.
