Best book for Zen Tanglers
Why not learn from the source? This is written by the husband and wife team that put zentangles on the map. It is very logical, and brings you through lessons that will help you really improve your work. Highly recommended for all.

Great book!!!!
This is an absolutely fabulous resource for any Zentangle beginner or expert. I love that it talks about how the Zentangle method was created but also the different ways to make tangles of a beginner type. I refer to it often!

An interesting interface with time - drawing - and process!
Thorough explanations and beautiful artwork - as would be expected from the founders of Zentangle. The exercises are wonderful The encouragement is consistent. The progress from basic to more complex is gradual. The trick is to keep from reading and saying, "yeah, got that" and rushing onward through the material. The principles behind the doing takes time to absorb and must be applied to the 'doing' part over and over. Practicing the strokes and allowing yourself time for muscle memory (like scales on the piano). I am fascinated by the slow, one-stroke-at-a-time philosophy -- a wholly different approach from representational drawing. I find not focusing on the outcome but letting yourself be immersed 'in the moment' in the process is easier to read about than to do. A challenge and a perfect antidote for someone who feels they are always wrestling with 'time' in one way or another. A rush to mastery is not what this is about An excellent Zentangle primer!!

No prior skill needed! So fun!
It's whimsical. It's zany. It's fun. If you want to draw or sketch but don't know where to start, this is the book for you. (There are no mistakes in Zentangle!) If you already draw or sketch, this book will enhance your imagination. Easy to follow step-by-step instructions that are illustrated perfectly. My only complaint is that it was mailed in a flimsy packaging so it arrived with the cover slightly damaged but overall still usable.

Excellent Zentangle resource
A Zentangle instructor recommended this book. Even though I have other books on the subject, this book is particularly helpful because of the sheer number of tangles and fragments represented. Perhaps because it is written by the founders of Zentangle, I have a better understanding of the practice. If you can only buy one book on the subject, make this the one!

Beautiful artwork, Amazing book
This book blew my socks off. I have been tangling for a few years off and on, and have worked from a lot of Zentangle books. This book is a million times better than any other Zentangle books, and it's even better than some of the very talented celebrity CZTs whose work you can find all over the internet.Rick and Maria's artwork is just breathtaking. And this book is filled with examples of their tangles that are very aspirational. You can very much see the origins of Zentangle in calligraphy and traditional pen work in their drawings. They tend to look softer and more flowing than you see elsewhere, as well as being able to pack a huge number of tangle patterns and complexity into a small space.I had expected the two originators of Zentangle to be quite stuffy and precious in how their methods are used, and what kind of artwork you end up with. But this book is just the opposite. The way they use the tangles is so fluid and creative. From lesson one we are invited to completely change the way tangle patterns are used, and by the end of the book you are completely pulling apart familiar tangles. Before the first page, in the endpapers, they are even using colour (colour is not specifically addressed in the lessons, though). There is just so much thoughtfulness and thoroughness in this book. For example, every major piece of Zentangle art in the book is unpacked at the back of the book, listing out every tangle and fragment used, and explaining a bit about the major shapes in the piece or how they made design decisions. Every topic that is addressed is given a lot of detail, and a full explanation of why you should be interested and consider using it yourself. Issues such as auras, shading, how to address mistakes, etc. They also use a lot of space talking about the meditative aspects of Zentangle, and how to get therapeutic benefits, not just make pretty drawings. Sprinkled throughout the book are exercises and prompts that reinforce the explanation in the text. Most are a challenge for how to use a tangle in a new way, and some sound quite hard.Overall, I loved the book from the first page. Who would I recommend it for? I think this book is somewhat beginner friendly, but I don't think you NEED to pay the high price and order this from America as a complete beginner. It may be a bit too much information for a beginner to see all at once and be overwhelming. Though I do think their way of wording a lot of the basics is better than I've seen them anywhere else. I think anyone who has tried enough Zentangle to know they like it a lot and want to buy a book, this book is probably the best one to have.It is also great no matter how advanced you are, because there is unique, high quality advice in here you won't see elsewhere. The artwork inside is very inspiring, and there is loads to learn just by studying those. But there is also tons of very interesting guidance on how to approach strings, how to innovate your own tangleations, etc. Many of the exercises included will challenge even experienced tanglers. The only reservation I might have about recommending this book to absolutely everyone, is how artistic it is. This book really addresses you as an artist (and as such I think it would be useful for any artist or hand letterer as something to dip into. You don't need to be a Zentangle hobbyist to get a lot out of it). In other books and places, Zentangle is presented very much as something easy to pick up, and for people who have no art experience or confidence, and they include a lot of beginner artwork. This book doesn't lean into that side of it. It does talk a bit at the start about how anyone can learn the method. But then it goes on to have A LOT of words and wordy explanations of things. Although there are a lot of pictures, there are a lot of big sections of text, too. This book invites you to read some, and then go away and come up with your own Zentangle tile. It isn't a workbook style that holds your hand closely while you work on your early tiles. It immediately adds flexibility and complexity, and I think could be intimidating for someone who wants a simple explanation. If you want a simple introduction that guides you quite closely through your first handful of tiles, that's the one thing other books do better. In conclusion, a beautifully written and presented book, filled with inspiring artwork and thoughtful instruction. Well worth the higher price over other Zentangle books, and really does live up to the promise.
