Yiddish Folktales (The Pantheon Fairy Tale and Folklore Library)

Totally Yiddish anthologies don't usually cross my path, so when one does I get excited. Although I have yet to read this volume, the photos are genuine. Above the title on each chapter is a photograph of a paper cutting. This is an ancient Jewish art dear to me. These additions make this book more authentic, before I have even read it, increasing my enthusiasm. I'm looking forward to every last story.

Great condition just not the edition shown which I was trying to match to others in my series.

The editor, Beatrice Silverman Weinreich, is a research associate at the YIVO institute for Jewish Research in NYC, so she obviously waded through many folktales to get this collection, which is astounding. Every story is perfect for slow reading, a bedtime story, or a car ride. Perfect.

Totally different book cover than expected. BUT, I doubt there are bootleg Yiddish folktales of suspect quality, so I am keeping it.

History before the tales was very informative. I was expecting more interesting stories but I liked just the couple of them. Anyway, the book helps to understand Yiddish culture.

I loved this book. It is full of wonderful Yiddish folktales that bring humor to forefront of old traditional Jewish families in Eastern Europe.

Nicely organized version of the stories I grew up with.

But it was too complicated for her so I read it myself and loved every minute. These are the wise stories my grandparents would have told me had I been able to understand them.

It's a good and comprehensive collection. The feature that I like most about it is that Yiddish humour is not lost in American English translation.
