Redundant writing, outdated
I had to get this book for a class. It was hard to get through. The writing is really redundant and if you read some of the sentences out loud it's like they're trying to make tongue twisters sometimes.

Good introductory textbook
Dry, but informative. This is a great introduction to contemporary Russian politics. You'll learn about the governmental structure and economic policies of the Russian government, the relationship between the central government and it's constituent republics, okrugs, oblasts, etc., the interplay between the legislative and executive branches on the federal level, and learn a little about the informal institutions of power as well.

Recognized as a scholarly classic
This book is now in its 7th edition, and deservedly so. Remington is a well regarded scholar and this volume follows the history of the collapse of the USSR and its fitful evolution as the Russian Federation from Yeltsin to Putin, and the rise and painful evolution of Putin's evolving view of the place of Russia in the world community. His review of the republics' place in the context of the Russian future is concisely done. This is a slim volume that has depth, yet can be read by the intelligent student.
