Bonus Feature!
I have to say Shout Factory tried to get some bonuses to add onto this classic film. A few are off VHS tapes it seems, good to have now I think since it shows you what things were kind of like back then. Like the promo for vhs stores to carry the film. it was an interesting sell. the bonus feature shout created is i think over 30 minutes and it features the screen writer, director and of course John. It was very well done and brought some nice insight about this film. The only gripe i have with this bluray is that it's just a standard english only film with english subtitles. Blurays nowadays should carry at least 3 audio tracks: English, Spanish (second biggest language used in the states) and French. Same for subtitles, blurays can have a plethora of subtitles and there is no reason why it shouldn't have at least 3 different languages for subs. But that doesn't hurt this film, the transfer was very well done. i'm very pleased with this release and i hope many others buy it!

Finally on Bluray! Looks amazing!
Finally on Bluray thanks to Shout Select. This has always been one of favorites. It was one of the first mainstream gay comedies along with Priscilla Queen of the desert in the early 90’s.This Bluray is the best Too Wong Foo has ever looked. Slight grain overall. For the most part the image is sharp, detail in the hair in close up shots look great. It doesn’t look like any digital noise scrubbing was applied. Some shots are a bit soft but I think that is how it was originally filmed. Color is great and the film overall has a very natural look.I highly recommend this film.

"To Wong Foo" is a "Cult Classic" that I very highly recommend !!
This movie has really grown on me over the years. Though in 1995 things were much different for gay people than they are now and this movie garnered its share of negative attention during its original release. I originally assumed that it would be just another stereotypical gay themed movie full of campy, cheesy one-liners and exaggerated drag performances. It turned out that I was somewhat correct but not entirely so. Also, like many gay people ,I was a little surprised to see heavy hitters like Snipes, Leguizamo and Swayze playing lead roles as drag performers. The first time I saw this film, which was after it was out of the theaters, I was a little appalled by what then had then seemed almost like an exploitation of the LGBTQ community and the ongoing bigotry and trials we face. About a half decade later I watched this film again and my mind was changed. I appreciated the lead characters depictions of gay men who are drag performers. The storyline is consistent with gay themed movies of its time. There is the expected instances of how conservative parent/s react to the idea that there son/child is gay and a drag performer and the ostracization of that child that follows and inevitably leads to bitterness. What was really surprising are the performances of the three main characters. That initial feeling of being appalled had changed to being very impressed. Snipes (Noxeema Jackson), Leguizamo (Chi Chi Rodriguez) and Swayze (Vida Boheme) embodied their characters by giving the viewer solid dramatic and solid comedic performances without overdoing it. Here's a short summary of the movie. Noxeema and Vida (who are seasoned performers) win a drag contest and a trip to California to be in the drag finals and to meet Julie Newmar whom Vida idolizes and worships. After their performances they meet newbie "Chi Chi Rodriguez". Hearing her sob story they decide to invite her along but they only have two flight tickets and since none of them has the money to buy an extra round trip, plane ticket, they decide to have their tickets refunded and use the money to buy a car and drive instead. On the way from New York city to California and out in the middle of what seems to be nowhere and still in drag; and they are in drag for the entire movie, they're stopped after dark by a racist, small minded bigoted sheriff, played very well by Chris Penn (RIP) (brother to Sean Penn). Sheriff Dollard calls Vida out of the car and towards his car and makes a pass at her ( by "a pass" I mean what amounts to a sexual assault) and then reaches his hand under Vida's skirt and to his surprise discovers Vida is a male. Dollard is pushed away by Vida, falls to the grown and hits his head and is knocked out cold. They flee the scene and after a while on the road their car breaks down. They manage to get a ride and their car towed to a small town. Without giving up much more of the plot I'll say that they are eventually embraced by and help to awaken the town's resident's passions which leads to the residents thwarting Sheriff Dollard's attempts to find and arrest the three drag queens. This movie has a list of very good actors including Stockard Channing, Blythe Danner, RuPaul, Jason London and Alice Drummond, among others. This movie is a cult classic that I very highly recommend.

It is a great movie. It is all about friendship
It is a great movie. It is all about friendship, kindness, empathy and compassion. All the things our society seems to lack these days. I reccomend it for everyone to see.

Hilarious and entertaining
This is easily in my top 10 films. I was pretty impressed with the acting. It's a very good sign to me when straight men can play a drag queen convincingly and Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo did an outstanding job! You will love this movie and get a lot of laughs out of it! Also, it feels so right to watch Patrick Swayze's character knock out a perverted police officer in this film. Now that's karma! You go, girl.

Too Wong Foo-barred
I remember this from when I was younger and its still hilarious today. Patrick Swayze does a fantastic portrayal and is absolutely gorgeous, John Leguizamo is so beautiful as Chi Chi that the first time I saw this movie when I was in high school I thought they'd gotten an actual woman to pretend to be a drag queen, that's how gorgeous. Wesley Snipes just adds a level of comedy to things that is amazing, because he's proof that no matter how much you might want to be in a dress, unfortunately, some men, are just built in a way that it's entirely too obvious and almost comical. The three characters together and their journey which is doomed from the moment they pull out of the used car lot is just hilarious. For its era, it paints a picture of things that we're still dealing with. Fear, lack of understanding, homophobia, and acceptance. And the last one is key, because acceptance comes from a place and from people that seem the least likely in the world to ever be accepting of things like homosexuality and drag, but that's what makes it great, they're painted as being back waters, different, country, and simple, when in reality, it's these 'simple' people that have the greatest understanding of what friendship and acceptance means, and that's a message that is worth listening to, along with the hilarity.

Set Aside Your Stereotypes
This was recommended to me, and I am so thankful that it was. It really shows the power of compassion and how people can make a difference in others' lives. Granted, the subject matter may bring questions to people's minds, as it is about three drag queens crossing the United States. It is given a PG-13 rating for that reason; however, it does take stereotypes of various types of people and turns them their ear. For that, I am grateful.

A road trip with plenty of drag.
During the lockdown due to the Covid19 virus I have watched a large number of films including this one which was recommended by my favourite film critic, basically anything mentioned by him in a positive way is usually worth watching. It is basically a road trip movie with two of Hollywood's action heroes in a totally different guise. After winning a prize to appear in a pageant in L A they travel from New York by car. They forfeited the chance to go by plane in order to take a young person with them who desperately wanted to win the prize. We then follow the trio on their adventure.Watch out for a cameo by Robin Williams who as usual is extremely funny and Julie Newmar who is mentioned in the title of the film. Julie was the original Catwoman in the sixties Batman series so to see her pop again in this film was simply purrfect.

Rather less enjoyable and believable than Priscilla
Well it's difficult not to compare this with Priscilla: two films from around the same time, both about drag queens going on a road trip in a less than reliable vehicle.Things I struggled with:Suspending disbelief that nobody 'read' Patrick Swayze as a man in drag, except one person who happened to notice his Adam's apple. No disrespect to Swazye, but the guy had a ruggedly masculine face, and no amount of stage makeup was going to hide that. Contrast with Priscilla, where most people 'read' the characters as drag performers once they got up close. A far more realistic scenario. The whole "When a gay man with too much fashion sense" speech. Perhaps something of its time, but the lines between drag and trans aren't so arbitrary, these days. The moral at the end was a bit too 'The Wonder Years.' I half expected Fred Savage to do a voiceover saying "I learned something that day."I felt they played the society's hostility angle too much. Assuming they wouldn't be welcome in a motel, for example. You didn't seem to get any of that in Priscilla. Not that there wasn't confrontation. Perhaps this was a reflection of life in the US at the time. Maybe Australia was more tolerant. Not a bad film by any means, and needs some love and forgiveness for being of its time. Friends had built it up as 'better than Priscilla', and going in with that expectation, it was definitely a disappointment. Priscilla is still my favourite of the two.

A cosy, funny film, good soundtrack
I love this film, it's one of my go to movies when I need cheering up.A drag queen road trip with a broken down car, resulting in the three ladies having to spend a few days in the boonies getting to know the locals. Lots lots of laugh out loud moments, an amazing cameo from Robin Williams (Naomi Campbell can also be spotted), an excellent soundtrack and some great messages about female friendship, acceptance and the importance of being yourself, it's worth a watch. This DVD has optional subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.

As to be expected...
...this has not really stood the test of time. Swayze and Snipes give excellent performances, but Leguizamo seems even more difficult to understand now than he did when the film first came out. Drag is now so mainstream with the likes of Drag Race (with a tiny cameo from RuPaul in this film) that this film now almost seems twee. As for the Blu-ray, well the picture is absolutely crystal clear, but the audio was variable and I needed to turn the volume up very high in a number of places.

Hadn't seen this for years....
I hadn't seen this in years, I had purchased Priscilla Queen of the Desert then I remembered this one. Although Priscilla is a good film in my opinion this I find is a lot better. It's a feelgood movie without any violence sex or swearing. Can be played in any convent or monestry (if that's your sort of thing)! Plus it has a good storyline is well scripted and a good ending. In my opinion it has the edge over Priscilla.I bought this used and at only 20p it was a steal. Dvd was in perfect condition so full marks to the seller for a good and fairly speedy service.
