Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within VHS

This is one amazing movie, different from anything you have ever seen. It is extremely ambitious. It is the first computer generated movie to try not only to be in 3D but to actually represent reality. A few characters, especially Dr. Sid, can fool you into thinking they are human, an incredible achievement. It is a science fiction story wrapped around a spiritual core, a very difficult proposition. It has adventure, aliens, alien war, romance, valor, tragedy, violence and pacifism. This is a conceptually, artistically and technically groundbreaking work.Does it work? Not quite.The graphics may be much more advanced than anything seen to date, including the contemporary Shrek, but they are flawed. Aki Ross, the main character, has a beautiful and soulful face, but her mouth seems chiseled on her chin, her teeth seem to be planted too far out and look like a fish's, her eyes are not wet but rather seem built of a hard plastic, her hair (each of the 60,000 threads individually animated) looks like a synthetic piece. Her body is too long, and her, uhm, bottom seems all wrong. Still she has an intriguing, star-like presence. Other characters, unfortunately are very cartoonish. All suffer from stiff bodies, their limbs attached to rigid torsos, as you see on plastic toys.By the way, the movie is not really computer generated. Rather the computer is used as a very powerful, knowledge based, colored pencil, under the control of human artists. The resulting visual experience reminds one of a very detailed drawing. Live actors were used to help the animators use the computer to render the movie's characters. No wonder, the whole thing cost 100 million dollars to make.The storyline is built around a complex spiritual core, which is revealed little by little in the movie. (If you haven't yet seen the movie you may want to jump to the next paragraph.) It proposes that each life bearing planet holds a spirit in the ground out of which each life form is born from and to which it returns after death. These planetary spirits are formed from some kind of wave, and, significantly, they are incompatible and deadly to each other. A fragment of an alien planet destroyed by nuclear war, has fallen on earth and has disgorged many deceased individual spirits of that planet, which move around like phantoms and lay waste to much of our life sphere.Well, this is a rather complicated background for most of the movie going public, not to say slightly derogatory of the Christian world view. Star War's "the force be with you" was a much simpler proposition. The joy in Final Fantasy is in taking in the beauty of the realistic but completely human-made world it depicts. Less spirituality and more laughs and sexual tension would certainly have made it more successful. This movie takes itself too seriously for its own good. Shrek's creators were smarter in this sense.I understand that Final Fantasy has been a financial flop. This is a great pity. Personally I would love to see Aki Ross again in a few years time, at 10 times better rendering technology. If a movie deserves a sequence, this is one. The movie's creators must realize that they own much more than the first photo realistic picture in human history, they also own the first human-made movie star. Let's hope they will be able to build on top of this amazing achievement.

The year was 2001. This pioneering CGI movie came out and was a complete bomb. I could see how fans of the "Final Fantasy" series of games would have been bewildered watching this, since it really didn't have anything to do with the games, so a bit of 'bait and switch' backlash from those guys would have been understandable.Why most everybody else seemed to pan it at the time and still dis it so much today, I just don't get.A lot of people think the plot stunk, but for an animated sci-fi film, I thought the story was quite decent.**Spoiler** - For once, Earth isn't battling aliens, we're battling the ghosts of aliens. Sure, that's fantasy, but to me, the story made a lot more sense than the plots behind mega-hit films like "Akira".I remembered seeing this film in the theater literally decades ago, had it on DVD at some point, then just recently bought it on 4k out of nostalgia.How has it held up?Well, the CGI is still very good, especially considering that this was made in 2001, but of course a lot of advances have been made since then. Onscreen the characters display convincing weight (and weightlessness), but the lip syncing is really pretty bad. Hair and facial emotion renderings sometimes look corny. Parts of the story will induce eye rolls.And it's just weird to hear Steve Buscemi and Donald Sutherland's very distinctive voices coming out of CGI "human" characters that look nothing like the actual actors - I'm not saying that's a fault, it's just weird to the point of being distracting, especially if you're a big fan of either of these guys.Still, there's a decently entertaining story here that's as good or better than a lot of the sci-fi films I've seen in the many years since.And it's still worth a look if you've stayed away because of all the bad press, IMHOP. :)

TL.DR: Dawn of the dead bluray in Final fantasy spirits within case.The box was good, sealed, however my woes would begin later on...The blu ray has the face of a bald man with several birds covering half his face, I played the movie on a blu-ray player.The title of final fantasy had changed, instead being replaced by dawn of the dead.I never recalled how people were torn apart and eaten, but now I am sure I must have my memories of Final fantasy were and are completely wrong. It is clear to me that final fantasy spirits within is now a zombie movie thus shattering my childhood dreams.In other words if Amazon cares to read this and put pressure on the supplier to give me the correct copy without any effort on my part, Great.Otherwise a disappointed customer in terms of a product sent.

Wir schreiben das Jahr 2065, und vor über dreißig Jahren schlug ein großer Meteorit im Kaukasus ein. Wie die Menschheit leidvoll erfahren musste, brachte der Meteorit sogenannte Phantome mit: hologrammartige Wesen mit dem Aussehen von Sauriern, Kerbtieren oder auch Kalmaren; ein direkter Kontakt mit diesen Wesen bringt früher oder später (eher früher..) den sicheren Tod. Dass die Viecher feste Materie geradezu durchdiffundieren, macht sie noch gefährlicher. Der Planet ist weitestgehend verwaist und ohne Leben, die Menschheit hat sich in sogenannten Barrier Cities verschanzt: abgesperrte Megastädte, die mit undurchdringlichen Schilden versehen sind. Während die Menschheit in gewohnter Weise robust (und recht erfolglos) gegen die Migranten vorzugehen versucht, forschen die Wissenschaftler Sid und Aki nach den sogenannten Spirits; quasi der Seele eines jeden lebenden Organismus, denn Aki hat immer wiederkehrende Träume von einer fremden Rasse auf ihrem eigenen Planeten, und irgendwie hängt das alles zusammen mit einer Legende und eben diesen Spirits. Fünf der Spirits haben sie schon, drei fehlen noch, und die Zeit wird knapp: ihre Theorie hat nicht nur Anhänger, besonders nicht bei den höheren Militärs…„Final Fantasy – The Spirits within” war 2001 ein cineastischer Paukenschlag, war es doch der erste vollständig am Rechner entstandene, photorealistische Film, und 150 Digitalkünstler und 200 Computeranimatoren waren für den Film vier Jahre am Werk; so steht es bei Filmstarts geschrieben. Leider erfuhr der Film an den Kinokassen nicht den verdienten Erfolg, sondern fuhr soviel Verlust ein, dass das damals das Ende der Produktionsfirma Square Pictures bedeutete.Was die Handlung des Films angeht, werden allerlei andere Science Fiction-Klassiker als Blaupause herangezogen; so erinnern zum Beispiel die Phantome selbst (abgesehen von ihrer Orangefärbung) in ihrer kleinsten Form an die Bugs in „Starship Troopers“ in langsam, und zum Ende hin sehen die Phantome bzw. das Phantom aus wie das Dingsda in „Akira“. Dazu werden noch politische und soziale Themen wie etwa Umweltschutz, Migration und Rassismus aufgegriffen, aber nicht den Unterhaltungswert negativ beeinflussend über Gebühr strapaziert; ein paar Messages weist "Final Fantasy" also durchaus auf. Die Charaktere sind allesamt absolut klischeehaft, das aber tut dem Vergnügen keinen Abbruch. Zur leichteren Identifizierung als „Schurke“ darf der General als einziger des Militärs einen schwarzen Gestapo-Mantel tragen, aber was solls..Obwohl der Film mittlerweile über 20 Jahre auf dem Buckel hat, ist weder die Inszenierung noch die Darstellung in irgendeiner Weise angestaubt. Im Gegenteil: wenn man zum Beispiel Will Smith den Jüngeren in Ang Lees Action-Murks „Gemini Man“ mit den gerenderten Figuren in „Final Fantasy vergleicht, erkennt man dass die Tricktechnik in den letzten zwanzig Jahren höchstens einen Quantenstrecksprung gemacht hat.„Final Fantasy“ besticht in jeder Einstellung mit einer außerordentlichen Detailfreude und -fülle, und es gibt vor allem in Totalen immer wieder aufs Neue Neues zu entdecken. Die Kulissen auf fremden Planeten, die 3D-igen Traumsequenzen, die beeindruckend detailliert ausgearbeiteten Maschinen und Raumfahrzeuge: alles dazu geeignet, einen mehrfach den Kiefer herunterklappen zu lassen.Dazu kommt noch eine Story, die keine Sekunde langweilt, aber ein wenig Esoterik-Geschwafel muss man schon abkönnen.Soweit ich mich erinnere, war die Blu-ray seinerzeit schon hervorragend. Kein Wunder bei einem komplett animierten Film, und daher waren meine Erwartungen an die UHD nicht übermäßig hoch.Die Blu, die ebenfalls noch bei mir im Regal steht, habe ich auch bislang nicht zum Vergleich herangezogen. Kommt aber noch, dann wird die Bewertung eventuell noch angepasst.Ich finde das Bild der UHD perfekt. Die Schärfe, und hier ist besonders die Tiefenschärfe erwähnenswert, der Kontrast, der Schwarzwert: alles außerordentlich. Besondere Erwähnung soll die bisweilen in hellen Szenen bestechende Plastizität haben, die 3D beinahe schon obsolet wirken lässt. Dasselbe trifft für verschiedene Hologramm-Bedienelemente in Raumschiffen zu.In Atmos liegt der Sound auf der Scheibe nur im Original vor, der deutsche Konsument wird mit einer DTS HD MA 5.1-Tonspur abgespeist. Der Atmos-Track verfügt über einen deutlich breiteren, tieferen uns stellenweise höheren Klangraum, die direktionalen Effekte sind wesentlich besser lokalisierbar und der Bass ist ebenfalls tiefer, stärker und prägnanter. Hinzu kommen ein paar perfekt positionierte Überkopf-Sounds. Die Tonwertung vergebe ich also für den Original-Track.Die Extras habe ich wie üblich nicht angesehen, ich vergebe den Mittelwert. Die Veröffentlichung ist ein UHD only-Release und hat kein Wendecover.Mein persönliches Fazit: „Final Fantasy“ wird andernorts, was die Handlung betrifft, als relativ gewöhnlich und aus Versatzstücken verschiedenster Science Fictioner zusammengeklöppelt bezeichnet. Das ist a) Geschmackssache und b) selbst wenn es so wäre: die enormen Schauwerte machen alles mehr als wett.„Final Fantasy“ ist für mich nicht nur in seiner Sparte definitiv ein Meilenstein des modernen Kinos, sondern auch nach 20 Jahren kein bisschen gealtert und nach wie vor auch öfter mehr als sehenswert. Und bei diesem Preis sollte die UHD ohnehin in jeder gut sortierten Sammlung stehen. Kaufen!
