Adolescent Therapy That Really Works: Helping Kids Who Never Asked for Help in the First Place (Norton Professional Books (Paperback))

If you are a psychotherapist looking for ways to work with adolescents, this book is an excellent primer on how to do just that! Of course, it is all about being real with your clients whether they are adults or adolescents and developing that key therapeutic alliance.

I'd say this book is a worthy addition to a professional's library. That is, given that its value lies chiefly in the direction of how a clinician with little experience can begin to construe a constructive approach to working with resistant adolescents. I disagree with the insinuation that adolescents are resistant as if by nature. One might think that that is true if all one did was to try and work with adolescents in institutional environments. But I'd say that that's a systemic problem, a function of the force that systems tend to employ to "help" the teenager. On the contrary, many kids, especially when they come from families with the money to pay for private practice, are open, motivated, and much more malleable than the average adult. Not to mention, if an adolescent is resisting your efforts to help, maybe there is something wrong with your approach. Adolescent resistance is only one part of a much larger discussion.

Despite quite a bit of opinion and too many case studies, this was helpful as a supplemental resource for a counseling adolescents course. She give more practical advice of how to talk (or not talk) to adolescents in a therapeutic setting. It mainly focuses on the difficult situations while treating an angry, frustrated, or stuck client.

This was a great book. I had to read it for my "Counseling Adolescents" graduate course and found it easy to read and insightful. I used some of the techniques discussed in this book during my internship and was thankful to have had this knowledge in my toolbox.

Very good practical information. I like the way that it is written. I am slowly making my way through this book and feel that it is very helpful in my work with adolescents. I have noticed a few editing misses but that is reflective of the editor not the author. Glad I have added this to my professional library.

The name says it all. This is the book to ready if you treat adolescents. The author provides an abundance of information in ways that are easily applied. If you treat adolescents, you need to read this book.

the book is very technical and can be hard to get into but it has great ideas and can be useful to anyone that works with difficult/troubled youth.

I got this book right before I started working with a 16 year old teen - it was a tremendous help in breaking the ice and looking out for pitfalls a therapist encounters when trying too hard to have the teen accept the therapist and the therapy. Highly recommended if you work with adolescents.

Ein Buch für alle, die sich wirklich anstrengen und reinknien die Sprache der Jugendlichen erlernen und ihre Würde wahren wollen, und die nicht schon bei der kleinsten Schwierigkeit sich beleidigt zurückziehen und die Jugendlichen verwünschen. Klasse gut geschrieben von einer der ganz wenigen Praktikern, die sich auch wirklich auskennt, und dies nicht bloss vorgibt.
