Witness Essentials: Evangelism that Makes Disciples (The Essentials Set)

Good for self study but possibly not discipling groups
I would give this a 3.5 stars if I could. Ideally this book is a great idea and I would love to use it to lead a small discipleship group but I can't do it with confidence given what it contains--something is lacking. Some of the questions leave you guessing and I've contacted the publisher and there is no leadership guide available. The beginning section of each chapter has been completely useless. It contains a blurb to read and you have to define it in your own words but it's confusing so I just skip it. I am several chapters through right now and will change my review if my opinion changes as I get further. I did read some at the end however, relevant to someone I had to witness to (I needed that particular information sooner and couldn't wait) and the way it was explained helped me to look at a verse in a new way that was a huge help to my ministry. Some areas of the book explain things like current conditions to witness due to past events and I scratch my head wondering if it's really like that or who thinks like that. BUT, the good things that I've learned have made it worth reading for my own but probably not do a study on it from this particular book.

Convicting
Witness Essentials is part of a broader "Essentials" series, of which I have read one other title: Discipleship Essentials. Both books are extremely well crafted and the reader walks away with a firm foundation in scripture, doctrine and a useful dose of inspiration to carry out these important lessons into Christian life. Both of these books are excellent tools for a group study setting (I think 4 or 5 same gender participants works best). What really impressed me about Witness Essentials was the powerfully articulated foundation (and inspiration) for the often daunting work of witnessing. The author strives to equip novices and pastors alike, with essential skills to carry out the great commission... and then he effectively encourages the reader to step just outside of their comfort zone, by taking realistic steps with realistic expectations.Convicting work!

yet very easy to comprehend
Very informative and insightful. The author presented the information in a format that was logical and the writing style was informative, yet very easy to comprehend. Great job . I recommend this book.

disciples making disciples
Rather than 'drive by' evangelism Dan Meyer gives structure to the basics of relational outreach. He writes in a conversational, helpful way to key into sharing faith in an authentic way. Highly recommended for personal study, this book would also make a good small group study for those participating in a congregational outreach/apologetics program.

So helpful!
IVP Connect is the arm of Intervarsity Press that produces materials to disciple and teach Christian believers on matters of the faith. Specifically, they produce a number of curriculum resources of different kinds that individuals and groups can use for study. Recently, IVP launched their "Essentials" series, which is created to do in-depth discipleship with a leader and a small number of committed students. Witness Essenials is the fourth book in this series, and trains spiritual apprentices to share their faith with others.Witness Essentials is well-organized. The introduction of the book clearly communicates the need for evangelism training, and its inclusion in an in-depth discipleship training curriculum. The teaching sessions are logically arranged in four parts. The first part of the study helps students see the "big picture". Then, it gives helpful information in reaching out to people. After that, significant time is spent teaching how to life a life that draws others to Christ. Finally, tools are given to transition people from spiritually interested to devoted followers of Jesus. Each chapter has a biblical foundation, a memory verse section, a reading that offers teaching about the section discussed, and an application section. The material can be gotten through in one-hour, but it would be better covered in a lengthier time period.I have not used Witness Essentials with my church yet, but I have used other books in the series. I have found that adults who are serious about being disciples enjoy this study immensely, regardless of age or what part of the country they live in. With Discipleship Essentials, there was one octogenerian who said that this kind of study was the best study she had ever done in church, and she learned more with this kind of study than many other studies she had been to. We also had several people who were eager to learn in this more serious format that were not willing to study in other formats. I love the Essentials series! For me, and for my church.
