Good, but shows inexperience
I didn't know much about this volume when I ordered it--I'd seen some of the lines floating around and thought they were really good, so wanted to see the whole work. When it arrived, I sat down and read it through in one sitting. I believe this was a mistake.Taken individually, most of the poems are pretty good. Some of them ache with genuine feeling. There's a fervor and strength of emotion in some that can just about knock you over--and, of course, there's some of those fantastic lines that straighten out your spine and say, "Pay attention, this is going to be good."Unfortunately, as I read through the volume, I got a steady sense of... sameness. All that bombastic emotion is fine, but it felt like Ms. Siehl was pacing over the same territory again and again. Not that many great volumes of poetry haven't had a singular topic; the complaint here is more that this poet seems to be stuck in an expressive rut, ruminating on the same topics without the benefit of being able to express her feelings on them in varied or interesting ways. By the end of the volume, I was almost rolling my eyes with the sensation of, "Yes, you've said this already, and you've said it in just this way. Please do something else."I was unsurprised when I came to the 'about the author' at the end and saw how very young she is. She's got a talent, of course, but it's raw and over-reliant on ostentation imagery. With a few more years of writing and living under her belt, I expect the next collection will be much better.

spellbinding
. If you’ve checked out the tumblr writing scene then chances are you’ve come across a poem or two (or maybe just a quote) by the incredibly talented and equally wonderful Caitlyn Siehl. I haven’t seen a person on this website that just radiates kindness and loveliness off the screen the way she does and that carries off to her writing. Which by the by is a trip you’ll be thankful you took. Her words are raw and so painfully human that you need to do your soul a favour and buy this book. Right now. This collection contains a combination of old and new work which while reading will feel like your gut just took a beating and your heart just got hugged, fiercely.Recommended for those who enjoy beautiful words.

A break from Kapur
This was a lovely book of poetry that sometimes danced on the edge of cliches, but managed to hold its own. Some poems stood out more than others, and I found myself dog earing those pages to return to later. Siehl manages to command and easily evoke emotions in a clever and raw way, and this is a good book of poems for someone who is looking for something besides Milk and Honey.

Beautiful
There were a lot of poems that I had hoped to see in the collection that weren't there. However, Miss Siehl never disappoints. These are all true to her lovely, heartwrenching writing style.

worth reading
What a thoughtful purging from such a young writer. Some themes seem repetitive, but when she hits, she hits.

original & gritty
Very original, very rough-edged and grisly emotions. Early work by Caitlyn.

"Do not think, remember".
What We Buried is quick and unforgiving like a heavy rain that traps you on your way to work after the forecast promised it'd be sunny. It leaves you wet and disarmed to go on about your day and above all dripping with longing for the billow to return, to come back, to get something back which wasn't ever yours.Caitlyn shows one can't unearth clean photographs. Each poem has dirt about its corners. Each poem is a memory clothed in pain. There is immense beauty underneath. The bad news is that light never belonged to us. We never got to taste its hope, its purity. And it’s all gone, now. The good news is Caitlyn invites us to scrape the hurt away, together, with eager fingers, with fingers that broke and healed and toughened. She invites us to discover her light together, and that finding is a gift, and it is ours. You see the shot of falling rain. So heavy and yet so still. You wish you could feel it, that it could drench you. She takes the picture and dips it in red wine and hands it over saying “drink”.What We Buried is a journey of righting wrongs. Of looking to the past and saying “Thank you for the good and the bad, I’ve grown through you and I’ve outgrown you”; of looking to the future and saying: “Never again”.What We Buried is a survival of softness.

Anche no
