I bought this book and will purchase the remaining four ...
I bought this book and will purchase the remaining four volumes for my son. The book is well organized with plenty of examples for many important math concepts and skills. in addition, the authors also provide detailed answers for all the chapter questions. The material appears to reflect up to date mathcounts competition and will benefit to anyone who want to improve mathcounts skill.

I felt like it was a big reason that I made MATHCOUNTS ...
This book was very helpful for the MATHCOUNTS competitions. It has a variety of problems that focus on MATHCOUNTS. The book also has many practice problems from past MATHCOUNTS state competitions. After doing this book, I felt like it was a big reason that I made MATHCOUNTS nationals this year. Thank you Yongcheng!- Alix C.

Not an ideal book
I bought this book for my 7th grade son to practice math during summer time. After a few chapters, I found that the book might not be a good candidate for my son. It spent only a few pages to explain the principles but not thoroughly, which makes it hard to follow the concepts. The questions are not sorted by the difficulties (I saw in several chapters the 1st question is pretty tough). Also, you could find some questions exactly the same as the examples in the chapter. I am not going to recommend the book to my friend.

Not what I expected and more suitable for 7th and 8th grades.
I am a homeschooling mother who purchased this book to give my son additional problems that aren't available in MathUSee and to stretch his thinking. He will be taking pre-Algebra as a 7th grader. I am currently in the first chapter, which involves different base systems. Some of the problems given in the base number system involve quadratic equations and higher levels of probability than he is used to doing. My son is good in math, but not that advanced. The solutions to the problem are not ALWAYS explained in detail. As a homeschooling parent, you should have a very strong background in math to follow it at times. I have also found errors in the book. In addition, this is NOT what I was desiring for my son. I will not be buying any more in this series.

Plagued by poor proofreading, unclear (often absent!) explanations
Attempted to self-study from this book (and the rest of the series) a good 5-6 years ago, to little success, and only recently mustered up the patience to return to it. And now, as a math undergraduate student, it's obvious why my younger self couldn't efficiently learn much from it: the book is not friendly at all to students looking to really *learn* the material!Structured as it is, like a Chinese math textbook that we would consider more a reference book than a textbook, ever-increasingly obscure formulas are endlessly thrown at the reader, often without any mention of a proof; this results in critical intuition-building details being excluded (there are a number of PARTICULARLY egregious examples, particularly the formulas regarding integer partitions in this volume). These formulas, again without any explanation, are then used in a bolus of disjointed examples, many of whose broken-English solutions again give no insight into the problem's structure other than "use this formula!!!!". The examples are then copypasted, with a few numbers changed (sometimes they forget to even do that!), for you to ape in a series of humdrum, entirely redundant exercises, all without any way for you to pick up on what is actually going on.Proofreading is also unacceptably poor; during my second pass, I found numerous typos, errors in formulas, and even incorrect solutions. Not sure what else I expected from this author, who has published countless books of what are essentially his glorified lecture notes.Did I mention that the *entire* series is like this?
