The Houses of Pharaoh fall century after century, when we choose to take them down.
John Markey's book is a refreshing look at North American Spirituality. We live in false entitlements, grasping at gods that will not save. We need a conversion, breaks through's that remove the masks of despair, fear and exile. Markey's book offers with great insight the causes and effects of 'false' prophets, while revealing those who liberates the greatest need of love in our society. One looks at Dorothy Day, a contemporary woman who shows us peace in the poor, the hungers of the rich that only come through conversion. This book should be read in classes, RCIA programs and anyone who takes seriously a deeper spiritual life. Amen.

This is a very thought-provoking book that will stay with you. "The figure of Moses serves as a reminder that liberation depends on conversion and that conversion depends on the ability to see the world from another point of view than the conventional wisdom that societies normally afford their members." John Markey tells us that we are never alone in our religious journeys; community should encourage religion and religion should encourage community. A necessary read!

Very Compelling Ideas...especially the chapter on systematic envy. His observations are ones that our culture needs to hear--as we are navigating all new waters with technology and globalization.

I do not recommend this book because of it's socialist/communist agenda.
Wow. This book was very difficult for me to digest. I felt the author was really out of touch with Americans and was promoting a socialist/communist agenda. I did not enjoy this book at all and was not even able to finish it. I would not recommend this book to anyone!

I can't stop recommending this book!
Buy this book! It's the book that you didn't know you needed! I was lucky enough to come across this book when I was doing research on liberation theology for a grad school independent study. I did not have high expectations and was totally blown away. This book is rich but easy enough to read. It's extremely relevant to our current American context and will simultaneously challenge you and encourage you that we as believers are welcomed into something much better than the American dream. The thoughts and paradigms in this book have given me a new language to talk about concepts that I find deeply important. I've had many conversations with friends and family because of this book and each time, I find them to be intrigued and transformed as well. Furthermore, there are very well-written discussion questions at the end of each chapter that would make for a great book discussion group. I have not used them yet but plan on doing so in the future!

This book was great when it was first published
2018: Buy this book! Full disclosure: I know the author. He's one of the smartest, funniest, compassionate person I know. He's also a Catholic scholar and teaches theology. This book was great when it was first published, but it's now worth another look. I've had my own "adult religious conversion" despite the many reasons to leave the Catholic Church, I stayed. And knowing Fr. John is huge reason why. His writing is clear and easy for any American consumer to digest the reasons why Christians have so many differences when we are all the same.
