Vermeil is the Best of It
Sports? Coaching? Leadership? Ethic? Integrity? Philly? Coach is the best of all of it. This book honors him. I’ll read this again. And try and model more after him. He’s the best of it. And worth reading about.

This book is a must have for Eagles fans
Gordon Forbes has covered the NFL as a writter for many years. He is a well respected NFL writer.Dick Vermeil was hired to coach the Eagles in the Mid 70's. He took over a week team with few high level draft pricks andin 1980 lead the Eagles to their First Super Bowl appearance against the Raiders in Super Bowl XV.He stopped coaching the Eagles in the early 1980's after the few of the NFL labor problems. In addition, after some time off and doing some years of college broadcasting he returned to NFL with the Curt Warnerand Rams won a Super Bowl. He 's today is still a beloved former Philadelphia Eagles football coach by many Eagles fans.

Only sort of a biography
While giving some insight here and there into Vermeil the person and his philosophy, the book is mostly written as if the author did not have any access to people and had to write the book from news articles and what was on the web. There is some interesting background on his childhood and early experiences as a coach. For example, how his UCLA team wanted to take a break before the Rose Bowl and Vermeil blew up at Randy Cross for coming to him with the request. But once it gets to his pro coaching experience, the author recaps more about how his teams did during the season, turning it from a biography into a book more about whatever franchise he happened to be with. I learned more about the problems of the Eagles front office and the owner than about Vermeil. I finally got tired 3/4 of the way through the book and quit.

The Passion of a Football Coach
I am biased by being a close friend, including an Assistant Coach to Vermeil's first head coaching job at a California high school. which might be the most fun I had in a 26-year career in coaching, teaching, and administration. I couldn't have followed his work schedule for that long, however. JOHN GILMORE, Ed.D., Emeritus Professor of Physical Education, Athletics Hall of Fame, University of Alaska, Fairbanks.
