Arrested Development: Season 1

This is the story of the Bluth family, a once-prominent group of individuals who now have to try to live a more frugal life after George Bluth, Sr. (Jeffrey Tambor) was arrested for shady bookkeeping (along with a few other charges). This forces George's son Michael (Jason Bateman), who was planning on leaving the family's development business after being passed up for a promotion, to take over the company. Michael is the natural choice seeing as how his mother Lucille Bluth (Jessica Walters) is a narcissistic and critical socialite, his twin sister Lindsay Bluth Funke (Portia de Rossi) has never worked more than a day in her life, his older brother George Oscar Bluth, Jr. (Will Arnett), or just Gob for short (pronounced Jobe), is a lazy (and inept) magician, and his younger brother, Byron "Buster" Bluth (Tony Hale), is a moderately intelligent mama's boy who is prone to panic attacks. Rounding out the cast are Tobias Funke (David Cross), Lindsay's husband, whom she married in order to rebel against her father, George-Michael Bluth (Michael Cera), Michael's son, and Mae "Maeby" Funke (Alia Shawkat), Michael's niece. Oh, and Ron Howard narrates the show.Arrested Development is shot as a mockumentary, which, in my opinion, is a stroke of genius for this show, because it allows things such as dramatic and situational irony to be used in new ways. It also adds a lot of humor when the characters refer to things, and "archive footage" is inserted (or in some cases, it says "Footage Not Found").This is a very different kind of comedy than something like The Simpsons or Seinfeld. It doesn't revolve around punchlines and their set-up; rather, things happen as they would in real life, only the events in this show are a lot more humorous. Furthermore, unlike many other comedy shows, the episodes are serialized, meaning that actions in one episode carry over into the next. In fact, there are subtle hints in many episodes that allude to something that happens in the finale. And one of the funniest things is that at the end of most episodes, there is a segment where scenes from the next episode are shown. 99% of the time, the scenes don't actually show up, but they fit in with the show's continuity.The characters are extremely developed, and their individual idiosyncrasies are hilarious. For example, Gob is a crappy magician who thinks that he is the next Houdini. Unfortunately, his tricks either fail miserably or work too well! He also thinks that he's much more responsible than he really is. Lindsay is a woman who loves to get involved with charitable causes... because she likes throwing parties to raise money (one of my favorite was the anti-circumcision group called HOOP; I'll let you figure out what the acronym meant). And her daughter Maeby often rebels against the causes Lindsay joins, for the sole purpose of rebelling.The guest stars on the show are great as well. Henry Winkler plays Barry Zuckerkorn, George Sr.'s extremely incompetent attorney who has his own share of legal problems (he actually reminds me a bit of Lionel Hutz from The Simpsons). Judy Greer plays George's secretary Kitty Sanchez, who is a hypersexual, partygoing, cute-in-a-goofy-way girl who had an affair with George, and thus is in a position of power of Michael (she knows where some incriminating evidence is). Buster gets a love interest in the form of Lucille Austero (Liza Minelli, who I hate to admit is perfect for the role). Lucille Austero (AKA Lucille 2) is best friends/social rivals with Lucille Bluth, and it causes a lot of tension between Lucille 1 and Buster, who, as Michael points out, is still attached to his mother's umbilical cord. And then there is Annyong (Justin Lee), a young Korean boy that Lucille accidentally adopted when Buster was misbehaving one day. Annyong (which is actually Korean for "Hello") and Buster find themselves fighting for Lucille's affection (not that she has much to give) in some very hilarious ways.I can't believe I didn't get into this show sooner; it is one of the funniest comedies that I have ever seen. Sadly though, it may not be renewed for a third season (it almost didn't get a second, but it won the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series, so FOX gave it a second chance). And sadly, I can kind of understand why its ratings are so low. As I said, it is serialized, and while its easier to jump into midseason than shows like 24 or Alias, it is a show that you have to see a few episodes of in order to fully enjoy it. Also, as I said, it is a very different kind of humor that not everyone will appreciate. However, those who do will find a great comedy that will hopefully inspire others and remain on the air for years to come.

What can I say that the other reviewers haven't said? This is one of those shows that stands out from the rest. Not only would I watch it religiously on Sunday nights but I would videotape it and re-watch the episodes on tape 3-4 times and it seemed like everytime I watched it again, I would catch onto something new that I didn't see before.Arrested Development is a well thought out comedy with many quirky characters, and plotlines. I can proudly say that this is my favourite show because I can watch every episode over and over again without getting tired of it. I've already pre-ordered my dvd set and I can't wait to get it.Just because some people don't get the humour, doesn't make it a bad show. It just shows their lack of attentiveness. This show does keep you on the edge of your seats and when you rewatch it, you'll notice things that you didn't catch before. Like in the episode where Michael said that the workers had to be watched because they're like sheep that needed to be herded. Then later on in the episode, you see the workers getting lost and they're being herded into the back of a truck by two dogs. The episodes alone are worth the money and the extras are a bonus.

Todo se desarrolla alrededor de Michael Bluth, que pasa a hacerse cargo de la familia después de que su padre sea encarcelado pro problemas con la empresa familiar. Ningún personaje tiene desperdicio, prácticamente todos tiene miga suficiente como para hacer un spin off.Para mí está sin duda alguna en el Top 3 de mejores comedias de todos los tiempos. ¡Muy recomendable!

...das ist wohl der Konsens aller renommierten Kritiker (hier sollte aufgrund der besseren Einsicht vorallendingen auf die professionellen Kritiker in den USA zurückgegriffen werden. Wieviel man in eine Fernsehsendung reinsteckt - sowohl auf Produktions- als auch auf Rezeptionsseite - ist nicht mit dem hierzulande herrschenden Bild zu vergleichen. Das sieht man auch allein daran, dass das Synchronisationsgeschäft auländischer TV-Serien ein größeres ist als das der Eigenproduktion).Arrested Development wurde ab Folge 1 von allen Seiten gelobt, hatte aber aufgrund Marketingfehler des Senders FOX und aufgrund der mangelnden Aufmerksamkeitsspanne des durchschnittlichen Zuschauers durchweg Probleme mit den Einschaltquoten und hatte drastisch verkürzte zweite und dritte Staffeln. Über die Jahre allerdings wurden immer mehr Leute aufmerksam und haben verstanden, worin der Reiz dieser Serie liegt: Sie ist intelligent. Der Plot is intelligent und vor allem die Witze sind es. Dutzende, ach was, Hunderte versteckte Gags im Hintergrund die sich über teilweise 50 Folgen ziehen, Running Gags ohne Ende und Charaktere, wie sie dysfunktionaler und widersprüchlicher nicht sein könnten. Nicht nur ist die Serie allerdings intelligent, sondern (und darin liegt womöglich der große Sucht-/Reizfaktor) sie lässt auch denjenigen, der die smarten Witze und Dialoge versteht, ein Gefühl von Intellekt verspüren. Ein Beispiel sind viele Running Gags. Diese sind nicht nur in der normalen wiederkehrenden Form der durchschnittlichen Sitcom (a la "Bazinga" o.ä.) sondern haben eine eher archetypische Form, d.h. viele Running Gags sind eher wiederkehrende Themen die dem Zuschauer via Anspielungen ins Gedächtnis gerufen werden. Und worin liegt da der "Intellekt"? Statt eine Catchphrase immer wieder zu wiederholen (obwohl auch das vorkommt - es ist ein bewährtes situationskomisches Mittel, das seit Jahrzehnten funktioniert), so sind es insbesondere Abänderungen, die das ganze "smart" machen. Das archetypische Schema wird also beibehalten, Form und Kontext abgeändert. Ein Beispiel: Im Gefängnis von George Senior gibt es bei Besuchszeiten ein Verbot der Berührung, was durch die Gefängniswärter mit einem lauten "NO TOUCHING!" immer wieder deutlich gemacht wird. Ein anderes Mal wird George Senior zum Judentum bekehrt und versucht im Gefängnis (mit einer abgeschnittenen Schuhkappe auf dem Kopf als Kippe) seine Lehren zu verbreiten, wird jedoch von einem Mitgefangenen deswegen angegriffen und ruft reflexartig "NO TEACHING!". Das mag in meinem amateur-literaturwissenschaftlichen Versuch der Humoranalyse trocken und trivial (und alles andere als lustig) klingen, ist im Kontext der Serie aber ein garantierter Brüller. Was insbesondere auch dazu beiträgt, dass man sich mehr als einmal lachend auf dem Boden wiederfindet ist vor allem auch die schiere Anzahl der Gags und da Tempo in dem diese kommen. Um das anschaulicher zu machen, ein alter Musikerwitz: Was ist der Unterschied zwischen Rock und Jazz? Rock spielt man mit 3 Akkorden vor 500 Leuten und Jazz mit 500 Akkorden vor drei Leuten. Das lässt sich wunderbar auf AD anwenden: Während Serien wie Big Bang Theory durch ihre Einfachheit und Zugänglichkeit Dutzende Millionen an Zuschauern haben muss sich Arrested Development wohl aufgrund der Komplexität der Gags(und deren Struktur) mit einigen wenigen begnügen. Es gibt eine Seite im Internet die alle Running Gags bei AD mitzählt. Irgendwann waren es zwischenzeitlich tatsächlich zwischen 40 und 50 Running Gags alleine die gleichzeitig nebenher liefen. Dazu kommen dann die situationsbedingten, einmaligen Gags (sog. Throwaway Gag/ Einwegs-Gag) und zahllose Catchphrases und Anspielungen auf Popkultur, Politik, Musik, Literatur und Geschichte. Ich denke mittlerweile wird klar, dass für Arrested Development andere Standards gelten als für die herkömmliche Sitcom. Diese 500 Akkorde die Arrested Development Folge für Folge vor 3 Zuschauern abspult ist aller Ehren wert. Es ist kein Zufall, dass der Soundtrack von Arrested Development größtenteils aus Gypsy Jazz/ Bossa Nova Eigenkompositionen besteht. Arrested Development ist fröhlich, flott und verspielt aber auch intelligent, anspruchsvoll und gebildet. Die Gags sind nicht nur äußerst anspruchsvoll für den Zuschauer, sondern schlichtweg überfordernd. Das ist auch der Grund warum die Serie eigentlich beim zweiten und dritten Mal anschauen noch lustiger wird, weil man erst dann so langsam alles mitbekommt, was passiert. Was man dann auch mitbekommt sind zahlreiche Foreshadowings, in der Form von äußerst absurden und witzigen Andeutungen auf Events die erst (teilweise dutzende) Folgen später passieren (und die ich mir zwecks der Vermeidung von Spoilern auch jetzt hier spare).Es gibt zahlreiche gute und wirklich gute Serien da draußen, aber alle paar Jahre gibt es welche, die sich von allem was vorher war abheben. Die elaborierte, leidenschaftliche Systemkritik "The Wire", die wohl als beste Serie aller Zeiten angesehen wird (aber beim 08/15 Zuschauer ähnliche Probleme hatte wie Arrested Development), das subtile, den Zeitgeist einfangendes Epos "Mad Men", das Vorreiterwerk im Screenwriting und Directing "The Sopranos", das phänomenal spannenende und mit schier zahllosen Stilmitteln durchdetaillierte Charakterstück "Breaking Bad" und auf Comedy-Seite das extrem durchdachte, unglaublich komplex verwobene, absurde, und aberwitzige "Arrested Development". Das sind die großen TV-Meisterwerke unserer Zeit, allesamt Stücke die als ernsthafte audiovisuelle Literatur angesehen werden müssen, weil sie verschriftlichter Literatur in Subtilität, Komplexität und profunder Signifikanz in nichts nachstehen. Allesamt Serien, die an renommierten Universitäten auf der Welt (Harvard und dergleichen, kein Witz!) Kurse von Literaturwissenschaftlern gewidmet bekommen, die sich tiefgehend mit der umfangreichen Analyse dieser Werke befassen.Es gibt sehr gute Serien und es gibt Serien, die sich von allem abheben, was es gibt. Das ist eine Tatsache der man sich bewusst werden sollte, wenn man wirklich gutes Fernsehen gucken möchte, statt bloß das Hirn auszuschalten.Die Zeit in der TV plattes Entertainment war ist vorbei. Auch wenn es dieses nach wie vor gibt, so hat sich auch eine intelektuelle TV-Subkultur herausgebildet, die größer und größer wird.So, dieses Review war jetzt relativ lang und verworren, deshalb zähle ich nochmal in Kurzform auf, was Arrested Development auszeichnet:- Dutzende Running Gags- versteckte Witze ohne Ende- ein intelligenter Plot, der sich über alle Staffeln zieht- Catchphrases en masse (immer super, wenn man Serien mit Freunden/Familie teilen will)- ein total absurder Humor- sehr gute Darsteller- Foreshadowings und zahlloe kulturelle Anspielungen- eine Gruppe dysfunktionaler Charaktere, wie es sie kein zweites Mal gibt- so ziemlich alles was gesagt wird ist irgendwie doppeldeutig (meist in einem absurden inzestuösen oder sexuellen Kontext)- ein hohes Rewatch-PotentialGanz ehrlich: Ich bin normalerweise kein Typ, der das Bedürfnis verspürt, anderen etwas aufzudrängen. Aber bei AD ist das anders.Wer diese Serie nicht lustig findet, hat es entweder einfach nicht verstanden oder ist emotional tot. Und das sehe ich nicht als Polemik an, sondern als Fakt.

Série découverte par hasard sur internet.Je pense que cela m'a été recommandé par Amazon après avoir commandé une autre série.J'ai regardé IMDB et j'ai vu que le rating était excellent (+9).J'ai donc tenté et je n'ai pas regretté.Situations improbables, acteurs déjantés...Show annulé après seulement 3 saisons mais il semblerait qu'une suite arrive en 2013 (toujours selon IMDB).Seul bémol pour les anglophobes, cette édition ne comporte pas de sous-titre français.Personnellement, je préfère de toute façon les sous-titres en anglais pour garder un maximum de la saveur d'origine.Je recommande à 100%

I'd never seen any ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT back in the day as it was on an obscure channel at an equally obscure time. I recently accidentally caught it on re-run and within 3 minutes it had me......hook, line and sinker!Having caught a dozen side splitting episodes I immediately placed an order through Amazon for the whole darned box set - and I wasn't disappointed. A terrific collectors box set with all 3 seasons and a bounty of extra features. Audio commentaries from cast and creator, a lot of deleted scenes, bloopers, numerous featurettes, interviews and even a nice bonus uncensored pilot episode (which never aired).Just how this utterly brilliant comedy passed me by years ago is a mystery as it really is some of the best and wackiest comic excellence ever to hit the airwaves. I haven't laughed out loud so much in years...hilarious characters, rapid fire moments of comic brilliance - which demand repeat viewing to take it all in. The cast are uniformly perfect, making it tough to pick a favourite, though I think Will Arnett's 'Gob' had me in stitches more than anyone.All up, as perfect an antidote for the blues as one is ever likely to find. You'll be chuckling for days over many of the lines and gags. Very highly recommended *****

it's all been said before but... Arrested Development is indeed the best thing that ever was on TV. Bring it back!
