which will be the very best way to help them and educate them compared to ...
We are thrilled to have this new resource written by such a knowledgeable and skillled person as Sarah Naish. She has many years of experience in working with children who have developmental trauma, both as a professional and more importantly as a foster and adoptive parent, and she has created a very user friendly and comprehensive guide for healing our children. The book is organized in such a way that it can be used to find specific techniques that will help a parent the moment the behavior occurs. Tonight I looked up “arguing” - the section begins with several reasons why the behavior could be occurring, which helped me to be more objective and empathic, what to do while it is happening, and suggestions for how to manage re-connection after the behavior has stopped, Everything that’s needed in one place- perfection!I’m planning to buy a second copy to share with our son’s teachers, which will be the very best way to help them and educate them compared to the way I’ve been trying to explain his unique needs. Thank you, Sarah!!!

Have you often wished your kids came with a manual? NOW THEY CAN!!
First, Sarah Naish brought us 'Therapeutic Parenting in a Nutshell'... which left us asking for more. She's delivered! 'The A-Z of Therapeutic Parenting...' takes the ideas in the first book and builds upon and organizes them so that a parent can quickly find answers. Have you often wished your kids came with a manual? NOW THEY CAN!!Though this book has the word 'Therapeutic' in the title, the bright jewels of parenting knowledge within changes the lives of all families for the better. There is not a person living on this planet who has not experienced some kind of loss or strong emotions in their lifetime. Ms. Naish brings an awareness of the whole body effect of these experiences, and how to address it with firm compassion and empathy. Based on a combination of like-minded perspectives, along with scientific research in childhood trauma, and an overwhelming success rate for healing children from all ways of life, anyone who has a child, knows a child, or was a child should read this book!

Good Information
I haven't finished reading it yet -- it's a reference book in some aspects. The book deals with children with brain disorders usually caused by early childhood trauma of some sort. It lists behaviors from A to Z and discusses what might causes for them and how they might be dealt with. The best part is that it acknowledges trauma that results in delayed brain development that exhibits it self in behavior disorders. That's a fairly new concept in the understanding and treatment of severe behavior disorders. It should be on the bookshelf of every social worker, therapist, psychologist, psychiatrist, school counselor, truant officers, school resource officer who deals with troubled children. It has some great basic information that is sorely needed among professionals today.

Best book for over advice on parenting children from trauma.
I bought this book as it was recommended to me for children with RAD. I loved that it provided real life strategies for dealing with any child with trauma. I loved that it took a different approach by making it easy to search for specific behaviors. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone fostering children with difficult behaviors.

Essential book for every therapeutic foster/adoptive home!
Excellent resource for every foster parent or adoptive parent providing care for a child with early childhood trauma. This book is foundational but also practical. It is set-up so one can quickly search for an issue they are having with their child and get the help you need in a few pages. For instance, if your child is struggling with controlling behaviors then turn to the “C’s” (it’s alphabetical by behavior/issue, hence the title of the book) and on page 124 you will find the what, and why along with a “reality check” regarding the behavior, then strategies- preventative, during, and after. It’s enormously insightful, and just what one needs when you are in the trenches with these amazing children who need special nurturing and love.Thank you, Sarah Naish!! Another brilliant work!

Love it and cannot recommend it highly enough!
This is a must-have for anyone struggling to parent a child with an attachment disorder. Actually, I recommend this as a fantastic way to parent ALL children. I was desperate, and ready to give up trying to parent my very traumatized child, until I discovered therapeutic parenting. I still have a very traumatized child, but she is improving daily, and I have absolute confidence she will continue to do so with these strategies in place. Sarah Naish GETS it! She absolutely knows what she is talking about! Traditional strategies have to be chucked out the window when dealing with complex children, and this is what you should replace them with! I absolutely recommend this book!

Former Therapist Recommended!
As a former intensive in-home therapist (worked with kids at-risk of foster care, juvenile justice, and residential treatment), I HIGHLY recommend this book. This is my go-to whenever clients come in with difficult situations as it gives the reasons behind the action, what it looks like during the action, and what to do after. It is creative and efficient in the strategies. I recommend this to majority of my clients.

Holy flipping hell, this is good!
This is an absolute life changer!Get it. Tell your friends to get it. Tell your school to get it. Tell your child's counsellor or therapist to get it. Tell random people on the street to get it.If you come into contact with children that have suffered loss or trauma, this will help you help them. And help you to help yourself.Everyone that I have lent it to has asked to keep it a little longer and has told me of 3 or 4 people they have recommended it to.

great!
If you are thinking of buying this and dithering about just do it! I was fiddling about thinking about it and got the sample to my kindle. It is so useful. I love the approach and the reality checks. I am biological mother to a child with asd. I am not the target audience at all. I think if only there wad a rewrite for asd and sen kids it would be so wonderful. This approach totally gets it! Plus such helpful things to actually DO. Books so often say 'I will expand on that later and give you strategies' Then suddenly you have finished and hey where were the strategies I can actually use in my home... Well there's loads in here! I wish I wish I wish it was written or there was a sister book for sen kids but hey ho, I will just have to work it out myself what applies and what doesn't. However I have learnt so much and I take my hat off to the other people who are using this book and all the struggles they have to help mend the hearts of their kids.

It’s like someone has finally written an owners manual and troubleshooting guide for my child!
This book is amazing, just wish I had got it sooner. Written by a former social worker, come fosterer, foster agency manager, come adoptive mum to five (!) children who realised very quickly the advice she had been trained to give parents was seriously lacking in effectiveness.Sarah Naish writes in a down to earth, straightforward way sharing her experiences of parenting and bringing up 5 children ‘rescued’ from severe neglect. She talks about why children with early life trauma behave like they do, and how to parent them, calmly and effectively with empathy and understanding without blaming them for how they feel.It really is like someone wrote an owners manual and trouble shoot guide for my child. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

This book should be give to every parent who fosters or adopts children.
I was a little sceptical about this book because I find some of the ideas put forward in books recommended by Social Care are more theoretical than practical. This book breaks that mould. It opens by giving some global guidance about the therapeutic parenting approach which is applied throughout. I found that based in sound common sense and it was clearly written by someone who has been through exactly the same experiences that we are as adoptive parents. The book is logical and well and well laid out.Once the basic principal is explained there is a logical a-z list of behaviours / problems whereby the behaviours are identified ie “What it looks like” then follows a list of “Why it might happen” then some suggested “Preventative strategies”, then “ Stategies during” and finally suggested strategies how to deal with the behaviours afterwards /long term. This book was clearly written from real life experience (although the author is clearly very well qualified in this field academically) and not written by someone with no real personal experience who has just obtained a theoretical degree obtained in a university. That is what makes this book stand out. The author knows the reality and not just the theory. She clearly appreciates, from experience, the major traumas children taken into care have suffered. She appreciates the behaviours children develop as a direct result of the negative experiences that have been inflicted upon them and offers practical advice to recognise, to understand, to help cope with and how to address the behaviours for the children’s long term wellbeing but also for the sanity of the parents. It’s not the child’s fault that they need extra help but the author offers more than sympathy, she offers ways of identifying the cause of the behaviour and practical way to address the problem. If you have a child who has been through the care system or is currently in care this book is a “must buy”.

Simply excellent! A 'must have' for all therapeutic parents
I received this marvellous book this morning and have barely been able to put it down. I consider this essential reading for anyone parenting a child who has experienced developmental trauma, especially foster carers and adopters. That said, this is a book with strategies that will benefit all children and young people. It's as easy to read as it is hard to put down and offers fantastic strategies and solutions for all real life situations.Simply brilliant!

A must have for any foster parent
I have a couple of traumatised children in my care for several years now. I've been on all sorts of courses to help them with attachment disorders, but this is the first time I've read anything that sounds like my life and makes sense. I've been putting a few things into place and hopeful we will see results, am very mindful that nothing happens over night, or even in a couple of weeks. It is an easy read, no rubbish in it and very helpful. From this I have also recently purchased The complete guide to Therapeutic Parenting from the same author. Would highly recommend both books.
