Helpful but repetitive
I would recommend this book to anyone who has no prior knowledge around this subject. My husband and I have previously attended some training about this subject matter and I was hoping to add to it by reading this book. There were a few nuggets if information I found useful but overall I didn't learn much I didn't already know. This book has some useful practical information but I found it a little repetitive on the reasons why secrecy is adoption is a bad thing and it had less practical tips about what kind of information to share at what ages than I was looking for. I did get some ideas from reading this book but I still feel like I have many questions about how to share information with our adopted child as she grows up.

Imperative Insight
My husband and I both read this book. Although the initial portion was a bit lengthy and exhaustive on the research and imperical data information, the dialogues between parents and children were amazing to read. It was so helpful to prepare for the possible questions that can come up and to find out how other parents responded to their children. We found it expecially interesting to analyze the types of issues that came up for the children adopted under the various circumstances. We both felt that this is imperative reading for any adoptive parents in preparing to be as open and comfortable discussing the topic of their child's adoption with the child. . .and to learn about the various issues that can present themselves at the most unexpected moments. A must-read for any adoptive parent who wants to feel prepared to make his or her child feel reassured and confident about his adoption.

Great point of reference
Great balance between surveying current scientific literature as it relates to the effects of adoption on children and stories from families who have adopted in a variety of circumstances. The book reinforces the notion that truth must come first, with love, and once you have that, individual experiences vary widely.

If you are an adoptive parent as I am, this book will be invaluable to you. If you are considering adoption, I would definitely get this book ASAP. It is highly recommended by adoption placement managers as well as adoption advocate groups.

Essential reading for adoptive parents. Covers ground that no-one else does.
Very informative book. I found it really interesting. Although it is about the US adoption experience, it is still possible to apply all the information for us UK parents who adopt from overseas. I found it really helpful to see how different children have different approaches. Some want to know everything, others like my own, are less open to discussion at an early age.

Useful How To book
This book helps the reader to do what it says in the title. It includes discussion of typical adoptive parent fears and feelings, the realities of a young child's ability to understand, and provision of case studies giving a range of 'stances' and 'attitudes'. A useful book that includes 'closed' as well 'open' adoption. It is not dogmatic or didactic rather presenting evidence, and other's experiences and allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions.

talking to children abotu adoption
Sadly for mew this was a little outdated and too 'americanised' for me here in the UK.Need to get some updated information, and with a new 5yr olD child just joined our family I may indeed look at penning something myself as time and information has moved on in this technology world !
