Death to the Starving Artist: Broadly Applicable, Immediately Useful
As an author of five published novels, I’ve learned the never-ending need for good marketing strategies. The day I picked up DTSA I stopped reading for a minute, bought another copy, and sent it to my publicist. Two weeks later, I am using Allen’s advice to begin a book-to-film project.DTSA is as helpful to musicians and authors as it is to artists.DEATH TO THE STARVING ARTIST is• immediately useful• witty and accessible• broad-based and applicableDTSA is as valuable for its perspective as it is for the many tools it teaches. Allen explores an artist’s frequently negative opinion about marketing and suggests an authentic non-cynical path to effectively promote creative ideas. It challenges each reader to examine whether s/he is ready to “go the distance” to be successful.By the end of the book I learned a fresh approach to getting my books in front of a wider audience — well worth DTAS’s cost and my time spent reading.I’m eagerly awaiting Allen’s second book.

Super fun how-to book! Who-da thought?!!?
How-to books can often be super dry and so boring, that they are hard to get through. Not this one! The author has a fun and enthusiastic tone that keeps the pace moving forward. This book gives artists like me the big picture of how to market our work in this new world of hyper-media, and how to stand out in a sea of others. The author, Nikolas Allen, offers a downloadable workbook to use while you read. I opted to read straight through the first time to get a feel for all the author discusses. Then I'll be going through a second time with the workbook to make his suggestions work for me. This book is definately worth the money. A great stocking-stuffer?

Super guide for the business of art!
I graduated from art school in the mid-90s. Educational institutions may be doing a better job now, but at that time, I was only required to take a brief senior seminar on artists & business. And, in reality, it focused more on portfolio building and not on the *real* business of being an artist. Nikolas Allen covers a ton of practical advice in his book and it's a wonderful companion to his blog, where he covers even more good stuff (like using Facebook ads). The info is timely, easy to read and conversational. Fantastic reading for anyone trying to make a go of full- or part-time work as an artist.

Free workbook pdf is no longer available.
I have read the first two chapters of this book and it seems very helpful. I would like to download the free workbook pdf that is supposed to be available online but the website does not exist anymore.

Nothing new
Interesting perspective with a lot of basic ideas. Nothing groundbreaking. This seems more for folks with no experience, at all, in any type of marketing. I enjoyed it all until I saw the picture of the author at the end.

Ignore the cover - this is a great book
Full of practical guidance on promoting your art from choosing your brand name, to getting your work shown and dealing with social media. Written for the US market , it all translates to a UK context. Easy to read without being simplistic. Recommended.
