Wonderful book focusing on the West before law & order & boundaries
This is little known history of the period before beaver trapping was at it's maximum until it was essentially over.Berry sadly, died before he could write all that was in his "poss'bles" bag. This is not a novel; it's history. Well researched and very readable.I liked it so much that I just bought a copy for my son.Realized that I hadn't rated & praised it.

A very readable popular history that was well researched and ...
A very readable popular history that was well researched and includes enough analysis to make it a serious book and enough gritty detail to make it an enjoyable history. There is no hero worship in this account, something that was seen too much of in previous decades of writing about the mountain men.. Berry's attitude is one of a journalist. His emphasis is often on the business decisions of the characters, which after all is what it was all about. But this attention to economic detail does not detract from the readability. And the culture of extreme independence among the trappers is well depicted. This is a fascinating corner of American history that did indeed have a big effect on the country, especially when the small numbers of the people involved is taken into consideration.

This book contains great historical information and is a fun read.
In 2015 the year I turned 70, I walked the Oregon Trail. Don Berry's book holds a lot of great information relevant to that journey. I got to see many points of interest referenced in his book and learn about many of the "Scoundrels" who gained notoriety from development of the Oregon Trail. I recommend this book highly.

Feels like an Accountant wrote it
I have a passion for this period in American history. This book give some knowledge of the time but reads like a ledger rather than a book.
