Excellent
If you have any interest in Aztec culture and day to day life in those times, this is a must have book. Thorough research, extensive bibliography, and solid writing support an excellent description of day to day life, attitudes and belief systems within the Aztec world. This work takes the reader on a comprehensive voyage in time leading to a greater understanding of their actions and world view.Very readable and interesting. Dare I say about an academic book on a remote subject... A "page turner"!

A new perspective on Aztec culture and human sacrifice
This book is academic in it's approach so if you're looking for a quick snapshot of Mexica-Aztec attitudes on society and human sacrifice, this may not be the book for you. It is very thoroughly and meticulously researched. The author has researched Spanish and indigenous sources and has worked very hard to provide a good understanding of Tenochtitlan's society and its expectations of its citizens. By using original indigenous sources as much as possible, she has also tried very hard not to insert her Euro-centric perspective into her study. I'm still reading the book but I'm finding it very informative and well-written.

A very useful and lucid book.
What a great book! Provides a portrait of a people who have often been misunderstood and sensationalised because of their religious practices. Pennock builds a picture of a people who were trying to make sense of the World around them and who were in some ways progressive in their attitudes to gender and supportive of members of their society generally.Well written.Highly recommended.
