Great for Sci Fi and Submarine fans.
I love The Deep, I admit I am a little old for CGI cartoons, but any submarine adventure has my attention for a short while at least. The Deep is a great concept drawing from past Sci Fi shows such as 'Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea' and 'Lost in Space' to bring us a family in the one of the largest submarines in Sci Fi history the mighty ARONNAX. Together the Nekton family explore the still unknow depths of the worlds oceans, educating the fans and wider audiences to behaviours of under sealife and environments. Along with the Nektons is a cast of supporting characters; Pirates, mad scientists, the inevitable bumbling professor figure and the World Oceans Authority headed by female commander 'Pirasol'.But for me the star of the show is the 500 meter long (1640 ft) Aronnax submarine, very different from other Sci Fi subs; Aronnax is unashamably benevolent with no offensive weapons; but relying on the wit and wisdom of the Nektons and its own advance performance capabilities to get her and her crew out of trouble as fast (if not faster) than they got in. NB:- there is a slight nit-pik here in that the Hand book describes the Aronnax as 250 meters long, but the official The DEEP website states its lenght is 1640 ft which is approx 500m. hmmm. This Official Hand book of The Deep is very well presented, not only unpacking all the characters personalities of the good guys and not so good guys but giving simple analysis and descriptions of the supporting underwater machines; the (Sea) Knights, The Rover and The Dark Orca. There is also history of how the show was created and the plot lines of various stories as well as the major plot line of the Nektons family's search for 'Lost Lemuria' the equivalent of the City of Atlantis. The Deep Official Hand book is a very good companion to take you deeper into the children's Sci Fi series, behind the scenes, in-between-the-lines and inside the minds of the creators. So I would highly recommend this book for any true fans of the Deep. I cannot wait for the third and final series and there is already talk of THE DEEP - THE MOVIE! Enjoy.
