For the serious air gun collector
A very good book for learning about old air guns as it was published in 1957

Good airgun reference book
This a very useful book for those who have an interest in air weapons. It only deals with items up to the late 1950's but it does give the history of this type of gun from blow pipe to modern springer and CO2. It does have slight bias towards the USA but mentions all the prominent british manufacturers. I found it to be a good read and it is a very nice reference book.

Surprisingly still relevent
This was perhaps the most exhaustive work in its day on the subject and is eye opening in its fairly objective treatment of air and gas guns of all types. Many of Smith's observations continue to be relevant as most of the issues involved in airgun design really are questions of physics. While Smith's writing is a product of its time (particularly evident in the poorly translated section on air guns from a Russian encyclopedia as contrasted to the rest of the work) it is a fun and interesting time capsule from the mid 20th century. Good information especially on early Crosman, Benjamin, Webley, Weirauch, Diana, and BSA as well as others that are no longer around.Well illustrated in glorious black and white.
