Other Germans: Black Germans and the Politics of Race, Gender, and Memory in the Third Reich (Social History, Popular Culture, And Politics In Germany)

This book is a must for students of the history of Germany 1920's thru 1945. Who would have known there were Germans of African descent residing in Germany? The book is somewhat incomplete however, as it does not tell us how many African-Germans moved to Germany proper from their colonies in Africa.

Very well written

The book is the most tedious I have ever read. The author is in love with the jargon of her field and won't use one word if she can fit in ten or eleven. I'm university educated and I enjoy the challenge of a scholarly work even outside of my specific discipline. Unfamiliar vocabulary usually has me drooling. Not so here. I plodded through page after page of redundant and tortuous contextualization discussion to achieve an occasional reward of information or insight. The author fills many pages describing what her intent is, as in this sample sentence: "In these chapters, I seek to show how an examination of the memories of Afro-Germans highlights the workings of memory as a technology that produces not only dominant accounts of history but also the potential for alternative forms of knowledge production and meaning making" (p. 82). I shared the book with several college faculty (a sociologist, a political science professor, and a psychologist). All of them read just a few pages and said "that's enough for me." It is too bad that the material isn't more accessible. The author is making good points and casting light on a poorly discussed area of history, with important ramifications for understanding of modern sociopolitical forces.

The scholar who produced this important work needed to read Strunk and White. The information is not accessible.I worked hard to "digest" many insights, sadly lost in the verbiage.
