Is the product calibreted based on the old background radiation levels before Fukishima nuclear power plant incident in Japan?

Accepted Answer

We have not adjusted our instrument calibrations to compensate for the Fukushima Daiichi event.   The activity displayed on our instruments reflects the actual radiation level.  So if you are in a low background radiation location it will reflect that, and if you are in a hot spot it will reflect that.   We do the background testing of each of our instruments in a low background radiation level environment and reference our calibrations to an independent lab with NIST source.

Question 2

At what radiation level does this detector saturate?

The instrument incorporates  anti-jam technology to prevent saturation from displaying false low radiation readings if the tube saturates (at very high radiation levels).  We periodically test random instruments in 20 R/hr radiation fields for quality assurance.   If you are working in radiation fields that high we recommend being very careful.

Hi. where is the product made? and also can i use this to detect leak for product inspection machine like x-ray? thanks

Hello!  The Radalert100X is designed and manufactured in the USA at our headquarters in Sebastopol, California.  It's generally very good for detecting leaks and scatter from x-ray machines.  The efficiency is highest in the 30 to 70 keV range.  If the X-Ray energy is lower that that the detector will be less efficient.  If you need to check for leakage and scatter this can help you a lot.  If you need accurate dose rate information an ionization chamber will be best choice, but quite a bit more expensive. I live 50 miles from nuclear plant. Will this meter max out if they have leak?

Based on my 40 plus years of experience working with communities affected by nuclear events, under most circumstances your Radalert100X will not max during a nuclear power plant leak at a 50 mile distance.   In the extraordinary situations that occurred at Fukushima Daiichi and Chernobyl reactors there is the possibility that being directly in the downwind plume during precipitation could max out a Radalert100X at a 50 mile distance.  Usually the dispersion and distance would create conditions that would not max out the instrument.  Since the instrument has jam protection, if you do hit higher levels the display shows Range Full when the full scale condition is reached and the Red LED stays illuminated to let you know to get moving.
