Outlander Packable Handy Lightweight Travel Hiking Backpack Daypack, Black

I bought this backpack 8 years ago, and it has gone with me on every vacation over that time. The small top pocket inside the main compartment is perfect for holding a passport and other items you might need to pull out during airport security and customs, and never again after that (way better than an easily picked front pants pocket), and the main compartment itself is really roomy. I have a telescoping tripod that collapses down to just over a foot long, and I can fit it into the compartment along with my travel umbrella, an iPad Air with Magic Keyboard, a travel pillow, an airplane tray sleeve with pockets for the iPad and my phone, and more. The middle compartment is where I store chargers, smaller bits of camera kit like my CPL/ND hybrid filter, mini-tripod, and also my AirPods and iPhone during airport security checks. The small pocket is where I’ll throw a bottle of Advil and another of Tylenol (I have chronic foot pain), along with other small items that I know I’ll need as I’m out and about. Other times, I’ve thrown neoprene beach socks and a beach towel in the main compartment, or things I bought while on a shore excursion. It really is very utilitarian and versatile in what it works with. Amazed it lasted 8 years, considering the thinness of the material and how lightweight it is. Real testament to the durability and quality of the product. Even on my last trip, where the inner lining was visibly peeling away, it kept everything inside nice and dry on the many rainy mornings I had. Buying another one for my next vacation and looking forward to having this one for another 8 years.

1,)received the backpack quick and prompt 2.) came collapsed and stuffed into itself thought before I opened it I thought it a joke and it was a backpack for ants. I was way wrong. Opened it up to find a small but perfectly sized bag 3,)extremely lightweight yet strong. Carries evryhing my wife and I use while romping away for the day or overnight. 4.)wide mouth opening makes accessing the contents a breeze. 5.) my favorite aspect is how small and light it is. One recent example is a day at "the Happiest Place on Earth". Started the day with 4 frozen bottles of water, a hunk of cheese, a couple of apples and some Jerky. At the end of the energy and cash draining day the bag easily folded back into itself (after originally unfolding it I thought it would be impossible to fold it back up like the manufacturer) and slipped it in to my pocket. 6.) the bag is small, smaller than I had envisioned but incredibly capable. Perfect for day hikes, amusement parks, and flea markets. with room for 1st aid kit, topo mp, spare H20 etc. still room to keep and of our small finds and purchases of junk.. 7.) Speaking of purchases it works great for small grocery runs. My wife sends me to the store for milk or what have you and I just put the bag in my pocket hop on the motor and I've got an easy way to bring back "the bacon" Great bag serves many needs. Seems to be holding up great but I've only had it for a month or so. I'd highly recommend it.

I have plenty of backpacks, but I wanted something easily packable that could use as a day pack. I'm going on a cruise in a few months and some of our excursions are 9 hours. I thought this would be helpful. It folds down into a very small pouch, and it is very lightweight. Two things that were important to me. It has three different zippered compartments plus a divider in the main compartment (nice size for an iPad). Surprisingly, I could fold it back down into its self-contained pouch when I was done using it, which was nice (they provide a little card that shows you how to do that). The capacity was very good as something I could put in my suitcase for traveling without taking up much weight or space, yet open it up into a quite nice size for holding all of my belongings for a day. The shoulder straps are quite thin (wide enough, just not very thick), making me worry about comfortably carrying it around too much, but the straps are adequate given I'm not wearing it for six or eight hours at a time, nor am I making this very heavy. All in all, I'm quite pleased with this purchase.

This is our third purchase of the Outlander backpack in the 20L size. I couldn't be more pleased with the ones we have purchased. They are extremely light weight, comfortable to wear even when loaded with snacks, jacket, camera and two water bottles. We just returned from a one week trip doing day hikes in National Parks. I did end up moving one very tall water bottle from the side pocket to the tiny center pocket which held it securely. The oldest one we have was purchased in 2013 and is still in great shape. We have had no problem with the fabric or strap connections as some reviewers have reported. However, none of these packs has ever been put through a washing machine. The oldest one has been spot cleaned a couple of times and hung to dry. In my experience, coated nylon does not survive machine washing without some shedding of the coating. This product is one of the best day packs for hiking or city walking that I have found. I have also used it as my personal item on a long-distance flight.My husband and I both use one and I just bought a second one for me because I wanted a different color. Update: I wanted to share that I have found the pocket configuration on this daypack to be convenient. There is an inside flat back pocket useful for carrying my iPad. There is an inside small zipped security pocket (this converts to a storage pocket). I use the smaller outside front pocket for quick grab items and the larger one for snacks, hand wipes and tissues. The zippers on the main compartment and larger pocket can be clipped together for added security. The main compartment zippers can also be slid together to one side and clipped to the little tab that holds the water bottle bungee. I keep a 1" binder ring attached to that tab incase I should want the extra security. I like this bag enough that we recently purchased the 33L size for our emergency Go-Bag. Fortunately, we haven't had to use it yet as we haven't faced an emergency evacuation.

I bought this on a whim during a prime deal because I figured it was cheap enough that even if it only lasted a few uses, it would be worth it. I'm really impressed -I'd definitely buy it again at the normal price when it eventually tears. I've used this backpack for everything from short day hikes to weekend trips. The main things I like about it: 1. Space: It's crazy how much you can fit into this bag. I've packed for 2-3 day trips and managed to fit everything in here. A few shirts, a pair of jeans, underwear, sleep clothes, sweatshirt, toiletries, wallet, chargers, etc. It's great for hiking, too, with plenty of space for things like extra layers, snacks, water bottles, and sunscreen. 2. Size: It's so tiny when folded up (not to mention ridiculously easy to fold back up). It also weighs barely anything. It's perfect to toss in a larger bag, or even attach to the outside, to bring just in case I need a day pack or more space. Once unfolded, it's a great size as well. I got the 20L one, which is perfect for budget airlines that only allow a personal item, and it still fits everything I need. 3. Pockets: There are two main compartments, a small outside pocket in the front, and another small one inside the largest compartment (which is what you stuff the bag into once you're done using it). Just the right amount for organizing, in my opinion, and the smaller compartments are helpful to store small items so they don't get lost. 4. Durability: This is what really surprised me. I genuinely did not expect this bag to last as long as it has. The material is so lightweight and honestly feels a little flimsy. I've packed it completely full on multiple occasions and the seams and zippers have held out fine. I do usually make sure it's not full to bursting, however. There's no reason to add strain to it and force it to break. I've been on many hikes with 2-4 L of water stored inside, and the weight hasn't done anything to tear the pack. The only thing I'd be careful about is leaving sharp objects inside. The material is strong, but it's still thin. I've stored pens and boxes with sharp edges inside, but just been careful with placement, or made sure to wrap edges in clothing. I've used this bag on probably 10-15 trips in the last year, in addition to numerous short walks, and it's held out great. The only real down side for me is the side pockets for water bottles, which aren't great. They are a little on the small side, so if I have a big water bottle and am moving around a lot, I feel like they could fall out easily. However, they're big enough to hold smaller bottles, and when the inside is packed tight, larger bottles fit more snugly. They also stay pretty secure on easy hikes/walks where I'm not moving the pack around too much. So really, this has barely been an issue for me, and considering how much use I've gotten out of the bag, wouldn't be enough to bring the rating down.

I bought several nylon backpacks on Amazon prior to my trip last month, to determine which size or brand that I would like. A few will be returned. The 22L Outlander backpack in purple felt the best and I now use it most days as my purse. I am 5'4" and a bit short-waisted, so standard backpacks are all too long on me. This one is quite comfortable and a good length. The side pockets easily hold my either or both a 12oz or 16oz stainless steel water bottle, or my sunglasses. This pack nicely survived a two-week trip to Europe last month as my purse and daypack, as we traveled by bus and train. It seems quite well-made with perfectly functioning zippers and no fraying on seams. It carried all of my usual "purse" items as well as an extra shirt, socks, snacks, pill organizer, with room to add a few souvenirs. Even though I weighed it down pretty well the straps were still comfortable on my shoulders. The other brand of similar backpacks were not as comfortable on me, and one had annoyingly loud material (I think that was the MCIRCO 20L). The Outlander (22L purple) and Hexin (33L purple) seemed to both be made by the same company since they fit similarly and had the same style and print on the fabric. So, I am keeping them both! When I had more things to carry, I would put the smaller pack inside the larger one. I used the larger one as my carry-on for my flights, and the smaller one as my purse. Both sizes fold back neatly into a little pouch, but frankly, I can't see me ever putting them away. They are so lightweight that they take up practically no space. I did fold the big one a few times and carried it inside the smaller one (so that I would have an extra shopping bag with me), but after a few times I just rolled the extra pack and placed it at the bottom of the pack in use. I also bought an Outlander (33L) in Black for my husband to carry, but he didn't mind the dark purple color. He may have objected if I had wanted him to carry a pink or red one, but the purple is pretty subtle. Both of the larger packs came in handy for sorting our clothes during the trip. One day we even loaded both 33L backpacks with stuff we should not have brought with us (can you say "overpacked"?) and walked to the Amsterdam Post Office to mail home a box of our "stuff" (yeah, we'll just call it stuff, to be nice here). These packs are SO SO handy. I got the impression, at the PO, that mailing home dirty clothes was not uncommon. Doh. Yes this nylon pack is a bit flimsy, but it's so strong and holds so much! For the price, I totally recommend the Outlander (or the Hexin). Buy one in each size. Keep both, or give one away to a friend! Can't go wrong with this product. I purchased this for my trip to Iceland and while it was not waterproof, it held quite a bit of items and was very light and comfortable to use. Had a decent zippered pocket and the water bottle holder help up well. I'd recommend this pack, and even stuffed full, it didn't feel like it would rip.

So this product does and is exactly what it claims to do/be. It is a lightweight travel backpack that is capable of fitting a good amount of items inside of it. Buyer be warned however, due to it's lightweight and portable nature the backpack has no shape or form of it's own so the bag will take the shape of anything placed inside. This means any rigid or sharp or hard object can be felt through the backpack on the wearer's backside. If this were the only concern I had with this backpack I would have given it 4 stars since after all for the price it served it's purpose. However, I have to give this bag 3 stars as I have found there to be discrepancies between each COLOR of bags. (no not models but colors). My friend and I both purchased this bag (he the black color and I the purple) prior to a short vacation abroad. While initially the bags appeared to be the same, upon closer inspection there were a few differences visible. I will be the first to note these are not major differences, but ultimately I think it's odd that there would be any distinction between the bags at all. 1) his bag has drawstring holsters on either side of the bag where the side-pockets were located, which is extremely convenient for holding and securing water bottles and liquids in place. My bag did not have this function all together and while usually it wouldn't be an issue, during our hikes it proved to be troublesome as my large water bottle continuously slipped out of the mesh pocket (on a separate occasion the lack of the drawstring locking mechanism resulted in my pocket umbrella falling out while we were walking around) 2) my bag did not come with the pictured carabiner while his bag did

I liked this pack so much, this is the second one I have purchased. The first one was years ago and I put it through heck. It folds up into a very small pouch that can be clipped onto a belt or bag. I take it with me when I use carry on luggage only and add this when I have more to bring back than what I started with. It is super light. It has pockets in exactly the places where I need them to be. I put my purse and computer in this pack, along with other work related things and then that is my one personal item and I still have my actual carry on. This pack fits under the seat on the plane. The other thing I do with this bag is wash it when I get home (because it has usually been sitting on the floor of a plane, or bus, or train.. or other less than pristine places.) This pack washes really well and dries quickly. I am happy to be able to get a blue one this time!

Bought this for my walks and hikes and it’s very useful for keeping a small umbrella and water bottle in together with towels and toiletries. So far it has lasted really long without any wear and tear, best purchase ever. Will bring this on my travels as well.

Ideal packable backpack for taking on trips. Folds small but is big enough to use as a daypack.
