The Flying Tiger: The True Story of General Claire Chennault and the U.S....
For those who still hold the story of The Flying Tigers in high esteem, this book provides yet another view of that "experiment." I thought it was a thorough look at Claire Chennault and the role he played in that critical period leading up to the U.S. formal entry into WWII. In conjunction with other works on the topic of The Tigers, the reader gets an in depth picture of the American Volunteer Group (AVG): the personnel, the mission, the deprivations and their heroic efforts to overcome monstrous lack of supplies and support. For The Tigers, Chennault, with his unique relationship with the Generalissimo and Madame Chiang, was the driving force providing cohesion for this small organization from inception up to their dissolution. I do recommend Mr. Samson's book, it fills in many gaps in the overall understanding of The Flying Tigers.Mike McCaffrey

My uncle flew P-40's and P-51's in China and knew Chennault. It's been fascinating reading this book and seeing how the AVG and Chennault got started. I can see now why my uncle thought so highly of Chennault. The author has done a great job of making a non-fiction book read like a novel. Reading this reminds me of reading one of WEB Griffins books, except this is non-fiction.

Difficult read ... very technical.
More of a historical narrative than an adventure. Hard to keep my interest because it doesn't flow well.

Very Complete and Entertaining
A very detailed account of the AVG. The politics between the military and Washington during WWII are shown from both perspectives. An excellent book about a great man. At times it can slow you down with numbers and military abbreviations (easily forgiven with vivid first hand accounts). It would be a very good reference book.

Interesting look at a complicated person.
Claire Chennault must have been the kind of person that you liked a lot, or disliked a lot, with little in between. The U.S. military must have had others like him, and it makes one wonder how the hell we won a war when there was such turmoil within? I want to read more about this man who lived in very interesting times.

I have witnessed the true history as stories written in this book
An excellent written book with all the facts that Chennault had been gone through. The struggles between U.S. Generals; the short supplies of fighter planes, bombers, ammunition and gasoline. For so many good deeds done by the Flying Tigers, I was the luck one who got the help from the American.I was saved by the Flying Tiger, when I was chased by a Japanese Zero fighter in Wu Zhou, Guangxi province, China 1943. A team of Flying Tiger came after the Zero fights that relieved me from the death run. I forever thank General Chennault and the America Pilots.
