The right tool for the job
Opening oysters with a pocket knife is dangerous. But, buying a proper and safe oyster knife proved to be quite the journey. There are all sorts of lengths and handles and blade shapes, many with regional names to honor the type of oysters found in those area. Oysters in stores come from all over the country and vary greatly in size. This knife got good reviews and I figured that safety-wise it might be better to get a shorter knife. I used it on two kinds of oysters, big ones from one store and some small ones at another market. It works great and is safe to operate as possible (there are mechanical hands-off contraptions to shuck oysters, but that would be wrong...). Hard to see in the illustration, the tip has an upward curve much like the end of a pry bar. You wiggle the tip into the hinge and then pry up and it just pops right open. The reason some knifes are longer is so that they will reach the upper and lower muscle attachment points so that the innards are disengaged from the shell. Since this attachments on even the pretty big oysters I had are only an inch inside the side of the shell, on the inside curved side, there is no need for a longer knife unless you want to do this from the end. Obviously some people find that easier or faster, but this is ok for me as I am not shucking hundreds of oysters. The handle is wood, shapely and comfortable. I hand wash it. Made in the US. Not the cheapest or most expensive knife out there. Perfect for me, so all five stars. It is smart to use protective gloves and I have a review of a pair.

Works like a champ.
This is a great oyster knife which makes it simple and fast to open those bad boys. The wood handle provides a no slip grip and the canted tip makes popping open the shells much easier. Seems to be sturdy and I've shucked some large and stubborn oysters without any issues. Made in the USA is a plus, baby.

Adequate, could use improvements for the price
Got these for pacific oysters, it would benefit for a thinner and stronger edge to pry open the shells shaped from the norm

first-rate american-made product
i've been using a cheap oyster knife i picked up in france - the kind with a short, broad, stamped steel blade. i think it was designed for the smaller french oysters with more delicate shells. when using that knife with blue points, the blade had a tendency to flex, requiring even more torque to pop the hinge of the oyster. after a particularly strenuous shucking session, i decided i needed a better knife. i came across this highly-rated dexter-russell on amazon. i was hesitant at first because I thought the wooden handle would not be grippy enough. after shucking a dozen blue points, i am happy to say that this knife exceeded my expectations. pros: (1) birchwood handle is easy to grip - even grippier when slightly wet, (2) blade is forged - no flex whatever, (3) tip of blade wriggles into the hinge easily - much fewer repeated searches for a good entry point, (4) tip of blade curves slightly upward to facilitate popping the hinge. cons: none. overall, a great product.

Good knife, but overpriced
I have no complaints with the knife. It opens oysters for me and doesn't bend or break. I have seen similar knives for sale in Panama City bait shops for about half the price, however, so I can't get too excited about this purchase. If there are no salt water bait shops in your area, however, (I live in Tennessee), this knife is probably as good a buy as you'll find.

Does the job well!
After struggeling to open oysters without an oyster knife I purhased this one. I looked at all the reviews and decided that simple was better. The blade is sturdy enough that it does not bend at all when prying. The tip and blade are sharp enough to make quick work of the oyster's foot. The work hand remains a good grip even when wet. I have seen the same knife in restaurants and seafood bars. You can spend more but do not need to. I usually get 4 dozen oysters which take about 10 minutes to open. Certainly not as fast as a professional but what's the hurry? I usae a kevlar glove on my other hand to hold the oyster. The protects as much from the oyster's sharp edage as well as an errant slip of the knife (Hasn't happend yet).

Not the pictured item
The picture shows a pointed oyster knife with a round handle. I received a round-nosed clam knife with a flat handle. I was not observant and failed to notice the discrepancy until I had discarded the packaging and scraped it up ineffectually shucking a dozen oysters, thus it is too late to snd it bag. The knife itself is of good quality, it's simply not what was advertised nor what I ordered.

A must have for shucking oysters!!
Shucking oysters have never been easier with this oyster knife!! Shucking oysters were just as easy as it looked like in the YouTube videos!! Using this knife to shuck oysters is just way too easy. Pros: - The slightly curved tip really helps with prying into the oyster - The handle is very comfortable and does not slip at all, providing a very nice grip - What used to be a tedious and time consuming thing to do, is now quick and easy (If you know what you're doing) Possible Concerns: - There were at times when I thought that the blade was just going to break off from the wooden handle when I tried shucking a big oyster or one that just felt like it was going to beat the knife, but I was constantly proven wrong and the knife held through. (IF the blade does break though, welcome to life, as things do break eventually and nothing is perfect!) - A very very small possibility of maybe getting a splinter from the wooden handle if the handle starts to chip away or deteriorate If your experience of shucking oysters in the past have been bad, then this knife just might change your mind about shucking oysters, after all, it did for me
