For the record: I'm not a mountain climber, but I've hiked up some 14,000 ft mountains in Colorado - the easy ones! So I've been bitten by the climbing bug just a tiny bit, and understand some of the appeal. And that's why, when I heard about this new book, I thought it would be interesting to see pictures from the first climb. Prior to obtaining this volume, I had seen only the one or two pictures that everyone has seen - Tenzing on the summit.This book is a gem. I love the old pictures, showing in detail the climbing attire and gear from the early 1950s: mittens and sunglasses, boots and shirts. It's like digging into a time capsule.The essays from various climbers are also quite good. In particular, there's a detailed set of notes on how to take good photos at altitude.If you've ever fantasized about mountain climbing, this big sized coffee table book will be satisfying.
