My kids love this drum, not too loud and excellent sound
This drum is very durable with a lovely sound. You can play it by hand or with the stick. My son managed to bend the stick shortly after he got it, so the stick isn't super durable but it shouldn't bend from normal use, I think my son bent it on purpose. My kids play rough but after a few months this drum is still standing so that says a lot. It is fairly compact and easy to store. This is a high quality kids hand drum.

Awesome little drum
We're so happy with this drum for my almost-two-year-old. It's a real musical instrument -- you can make lots of different sounds with it, and it's so inviting. It's also incredibly strong. It has been thrown, stood upon, etc. etc. etc. and is still in perfect shape. I love that my son can hold and strike this at just about any angle and still get a satisfying sound. It's a winner, and a great value.UPDATE: 1/5/12: Not long after I wrote this review, my son did indeed manage to damage the drum. The drumming surface now has a small dent, and it's not a great toy anymore -- a step below drumming on an oatmeal canister from the grocery store. We should have supervised our young son more closely with it, or waited until he was older. I just wanted to update my review and let you all know that this thing is not, in fact, indestructible. :o)

My son LOVES this drum!
My son is 14 mos and has these drums at daycare. He loves music and making sounds so much, I decided to purchase two of these for him to play with at home. Too bad we live in a NYC apartment as we have to limit our noise (i.e., dropping the drum on the floor, etc.), otherwise he would just drum around the house all day long! These are of great quality (not cheap), and make all sorts of sounds. It's a wonderful option for young children for their development and (musical) education. These are the first thing he wants when he wakes up and the last thing he plays with before bed. We haven't had them long, but they are holding up very well against his constant throwing and playing - so far! Highly recommend!

Hohner Kids Hand Drum with Mallet
As I have been building a personal Rhythm Band collection for my 14 month old granddaughter, it has been very important to me that I select appropriate size instruments and good quality instruments. I do not want to give her toys to play with for this experience. The Hohner Kids Hand Drum and Mallet are a good selection for my goal. The size is perfect for my granddaughter at her age. She can easily hold the drum in one hand and hold the mallet in the other hand. The mallet is a little bit thin for my granddaughter's age, but will be acceptable for school age children. We often use our fingers to tap the drum, or the heel of our hand. Experimenting for different sounds is a great thing to do, as well. The multiple colors of the drums are a nice feature, but the purchaser is not able to select or determine which color he/she will receive. I ordered two drums and received the same color for both. It would have been nice to have been able to request the color I preferred. Over all, this is a good beginning hand drum for young children.

Fun drum, great for kids!
I'm a musician myself, and have a toddler who simply LOVES making noise when I'm playing. Unfortunately, she typically wants to make the best noise, which usually involves one of my instruments. Many of mine are either fragile or too dangerous for her to play with, so they're right out. So I bought this, because it was supposed to have a decent sound, good for kids, and it was really affordable.I'm honestly surprised with the sound, for one. Sure, it's got a plastic head on it, but it's got a much better tone to it (it's actually got some tension to it) than any other plastic-headed toy drum I've ever seen. It's lightweight, it's easy for a small child to hold since the frame is nice and rounded on the inside, and it's got that nifty little way of storing the stick. All in all, it was a great buy. My daughter loves it, thus I love it. I think the stick is a bit on the thin side, so it'll probably break eventually. Thus, I'll probably replace it with one of my bodhran tippers. So yes, if you've got a small child that loves playing with drums, this is a great portable little drum.

baby loved it
My 15 month old baby loved this drum. Unfortunately he did manage to break it somehow .. probably because he started using the maraca to hit it.. but he loved it so much the grandparents are getting him another one! Huge hit. I initially bought it for my piano lessons with kids but he loved it more. It makes a nice sound which is great since not all kid drums make nice sounds!!!! This is basically his favorite toy.

Great little drum!
Our 11 month old son loves banging on everything in sight so we finally broke down and bought him a drum. This little toy is surprisingly loud and packs a punch! He can drum on it really easily. He mostly bangs on it with it sitting on the floor but it’s much louder when he picks it up and holds it. Great little drum for the price.

AMAZING DRUMS FOR KIDS!
These drums are fabulous! They have a great sound for the price and all my students love them. I used these for my 2nd,1st, and K scholars. These can definitely be used for kids that are not toddlers and be enjoyed!
