Lazarus

I was very happy to find this first album by Lazarus finally available on CD. This album, along with Winter Consort's "Road" and some Richie Havens albums, was a great comfort to me in my stressful late teen years. All of those albums, in my opinion, have stood the test of time and remain among my favorites.I have seen this Lazarus album described as an early example of Contemporary Christian music. The outright Christian references on the album are few, but the spirit of the Prince of Peace pervades the entire work. I think current artists in the Christian music field could learn much from this Lazarus album. I am always looking for but not often finding new Christian music that is more creative and unusual and that sounds different than much of the popular secular music of today. There is probably some out there that I have missed, since it can take much time and searching to find it among the haystack of what's popular and selling well.I like the fact that, as far as I can tell, no drums were used in this recording. Drums have their place, but they aren't needed here and probably would have ruined the record for me. Occasional piano, organ and fiddle add to the acoustic guitar and wonderful harmonies of the voices. Even if you have no interest in Christian music, this is great folk rock -- with the emphasis on folk.I seldom like every track on an album, but in the case of this Lazarus recording, I do. When I am not feeling well or am upset about things that are happening in the world, just looking at this album cover takes me to another time and place and makes me feel better. And then listening to it, I am encouraged and strengthened to face the present and future in a positive wayI wish more people could hear this album by Lazarus, a great name for a band (and we are all Lazarus, after all). I trust that God will lead to it those in this troubled world who are most in need of it, as I was and still am, 47 years after first hearing it..

PP&Mのピーター・ヤーローのプロデュースでビアズヴァイル・レーベルから2枚のアルバムをリリースしたラザルスの1枚目の世界初ＣＤ化。他の方のレビューにもあるように、このアルバムはＡＯＲではなくＣＣＭ系のフォークです。実は最初にこのグループに興味を持ったのはPP&Mのノエル・ポール・ストーキーでこのデビュー・アルバムの前にメイン州にあるストーキーの自宅スタジオでストーキーのプロデュースの元デモを8曲レコーディングしています。当時グループはSHILOという名前でした。そのデモの中にはノエル・ポール・ストーキーのソロ・デビューアルバムで取り上げた"Meanigs Will Change"という曲が含まれていました。余談ながら、ノエル・ポール・ストーキーのセカンド・ライブ・アルバムには、このラザルスのデビュー・アルバムから"Blessed"がカバーされています。当時、ノエル・ポール・ストーキーは自身のレーベルをまだ立ち上げていなかったので、どういう理由かは知りませんが、ビアズヴァイル・レーベルのオーナーであるアルバート・グロスマンから子供のように慕われていたピーター・ヤーローにバトンを渡し、このグループのデビューを託したようです。グループはウッドストックのピーター・ヤーローの別荘に住みながら２枚のアルバムをリリースしました。デビュー・アルバムの売り上げが悪くて２枚目のアルバムがお蔵入りするケースが多いにも関わらず、２枚目をリリースできたのは、やはりピーター・ヤーローのバックがあったからだと思います。その後も、キーボードのGary DyeがLee Shivelyに交代し、さらにエレキ・ギターとドラムを加えた５人編成で地元や全米・カナダのライブ・ハウスで１９７６年頃まで活動していましたが、１９７７年に解散しました。ソロになったBill Hughesは１９７８年のデビュー・アルバムDream MasterでまさにＡＯＲシンガーとして本領発揮します。前述のSHILOのデモ８曲の半分はラザルスのデビュー・アルバムの４曲のデモ・バージョンですが、特筆すべきは残りの中の２曲が、後のWelcome To The Edgeにも通じるような哀愁を帯びたＡＯＲぽい曲を既に１９７１年の頃にやっていた事は驚きです。偉大なメロディ・メーカーにして圧倒的な哀愁ボイスの持ち主、Bill Hughesは５０歳という若さで１９９８年に亡くなりました。そのBill Hughesがリーダーを務めるラザルスのデビュー・アルバムがこうして世界初ＣＤ化された事は非常に喜ばしい事だと思います。
