Q: My original Union Gopher faucet seat is the same length as the seat provided, but it has a different socket that the tapered wrench doesn't fit. ???

The Union Gopher faucet seats that I have, and I have several dating back to the early 70's doesn't use any tapered wrench. What you need is a 5/16 inch 6 point Allen wrench or better yet a 5/16 Allen socket. Go to a Harbor Freight store and buy a cheap 3/8 drive Allen socket set, they're easier to control than a regular Allen wrench.

Q: I purchased one of these, but it is very floppy when opened and leaks past the stem. Should it be so floppy when opened?

I would check the O-ring inside the stem assembly. If that seems good then I would check faucet escutcheon and make sure it is threading into the valve stem assembly and that the stem guide/retainer inside the escutcheon is present and not worn out.
