NYX PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP Micro Brow Pencil, Precise Eyebrow Pencil - Espresso

At one time in my life, shopping for makeup meant sitting on a stool at a department store cosmetic counter while a white-smocked saleswoman applied samples to my face so we could choose the perfect colors and formulas for my skin. Today, I scroll through product photos and read reviews before selecting a product, then spend a few days with crossed fingers hoping I’ll like it when it finally arrives. Such was the case with this brow pencil. My first impression wasn’t entirely positive. It goes on very lightly at first, requiring several strokes before I could really see it. After using it a bit longer, though, I realized that was actually one of its strengths. The color builds gradually, making it much less likely that you’ll over-apply with a stroke or two. It’s far easier to add more than to remove excess. I ordered the Taupe, and it’s the perfect shade for me. My brows are very sparse, so I wanted a color that blended naturally with the hairs I do have. I think the finished look is soft and natural, which is exactly what I was hoping for. There are many brow pencils selling for significantly more than this one, but I have a hard time imagining they’d provide benefits worth paying twice the price. The quality and value of this NYX pencil are just right. An easy five stars.

This brow pencil is easy to use and gives me precise control, so I can apply color exactly where I want it without overdoing it. It stays put all day, and I have not had any smudging. I also really like having the spoolie brush on the other end for blending and grooming. My only small complaint is that the two caps are different sizes. I have accidentally put the brush cap on the pencil end, which smushed the product and wasted some of it. Even with that minor issue, this is a dependable brow pencil that I will keep buying again and again.

So, I've been a bit frustrated this last week, because I'm afraid ABH has discontinued my color (strawburn), and as a strawberry blonde, despite having PLENTY of eyebrows, they're basically clear and invisible from about two feet away. The ABH "strawburn" color was a holy grail for me - it not only made my eyebrows visible, but it also looked natural with my hair and complexion and colored the brow hairs themselves. Over the years (I'm 43) I've tried so many brands - expensive, drug store, budget/cheap, etc. NOTHING looked right other than the ABH. I've even tried doing the hairs, but if the color is correct, it seems like it doesn't stick and if the color is wrong, in stick with it for about a month. So, dying it wasn't going to help. Cut to last week, when strawburn isn't in stock, and I start loading up my searches with "strawberry blonde brow pencil" and the like. I landed on this one and was reading the reviews. I was sort of interested in the "auburn" (because I'm NOT an ash blonde) - until I noticed a pattern in the reviews, where everyone reviewing the "blonde" said it was "too orange". Well, guess what?! Strawberry blondes are orange! Now, I've tried a lot of eye brow pencils of differing colors (blonde, auburn, and even medium brunette colors back before the color assortment became so wide), and exactly NONE looked natural; some even looked comical. One of my biggest complaints about the auburn ones were that they were too dark and looked too...PURPLE. You'd think some of these companies would want to be more accurate with their labeling, because those of us who are hard to match become almost RELIGIOUS about the brand and color we buy. I cannot imagine an ash blonde buying another "blonde" pencil if it's "too orange", either. I guess these cosmetic companies don't care that they're losing out on money because the person creating the color labels is likely color blind, I guess. My only little quibble with this particular NYX pencil is that it's so skinny that you basically have to outline your brow first, then go in and color it all in - which was a little uncomfortable and daunting when I was trying to do that before outlining (you can't see the hairs from two feet away, remember). I'm going to try the thicker option in the "blonde" too, but need to read the reviews to look for more "too orange" complaints. However, I have it 4 stars because it DOES color the eyebrow hairs as well as the skin underneath, giving it a natural look. Anyway, the TL;DR version is this: the "blonde" is for strawberry blondes - not ash blondes. So, if you're a strawberry blonde, with a very light complexion, crying into your morning coffee and wringing your hands about what to do now that the ABH strawburn pencils are nowhere to be found, or even just wondering if there's not a better color match to your hair than what you're currently using, I'm willing to bet this will be a fairly close match and even a cheaper option if you CAN find the ABH in strawburn. If the thicker pencil is the same color, I'll come back to update this review and make suggestions.

I love this brow pencil. I have sparse browse and it really helps me fill them in precisely without looking like a clown. I will definitely continue to repurchase as this has become a staple in my makeup bag!

Great if shade 7 feels too dark I’ve used shade 7 before, but I prefer shade 6. It gives me a noticeably softer, more natural-looking brow and doesn’t look as harsh against my coloring. The pencil is very fine, so it’s easy to make small, hair-like strokes and build the color where I need it. I also like having the spoolie on the other end to soften everything after applying. If you’re deciding between shades 6 and 7 and want the more subtle option, I’d recommend trying 6.

The shade I got was way too light and it breaks easily.

I’ve been using the NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Taupe for a couple of years now, and I keep coming back to it. The shade is a great match for my brows and gives me enough definition without looking overly harsh or drawn on. The fine tip makes it easy to create small, hair-like strokes and fill in sparse areas with good precision. I also really like the size and shape of the pencil because it gives me plenty of control when shaping my brows. It applies smoothly, looks natural, and lasts well throughout the day. After trying other brow products, this is still the one I reach for most often. I’ve repurchased the Taupe shade multiple times and definitely plan to keep using it.

Wonderful product for those with dark hair and dark eyebrows. It doesn't overpower the brows or make it look drawn on. Use a light hand with feathered strokes to create the brows you want to achieve.

This eyebrow pencil is great and definitely worth trying! I like how precise I can get the hair strokes (see picture attached for size of pencil). It lasts all day, but I do pair it with a brow gel. It also blends out well if you prefer a more full coverage, as opposed to small hair strokes. This stacks up against the high end versions. This is my second purchase and I will be repurchasing once I’ve finished this pencil!

Fab eyebrow pencil. I use chocolate and have light ash blonde hair. It’s like a light/medium brown colour but not too dark. Vegan and cruelty free. Always find it cheaper on here than most places. It’s also a super thin pencil & it doenst break. I’m onto my second one and the first never snapped or anything in all the time I used it.

nice colour for grey hair.I have been looking for a grey pencil for ages and no one seems to do them. Very pleased with this one.
