Understanding Movies (13th Edition) 13th Edition

I had to read many a film theory and criticism book throughout grad school and this was the most pleasurable to read - bar none. A lot of authors write with such drudgery that their books become a chore to read, but not so with Giannetti. His writing style is remarkably easy to read and his information is easily quotable and understandable. I had this book next to me with each paper I needed to write. Whether you make films or simply want to learn more about the explanations of concepts like mise-en-scene, this book is a staple you will continue to go back to for reference.

I used this book for a Film Appreciation class I was taking. I thought the material was straight forward and enjoyable reading. I have a general interest in film (which is why I took the class) and the terminology and movie back story have been interesting. The publisher has a decent amount of online study material and practice quizzes for each chapter that made the online Blackboard quizzes/tests fairly easy if you read the book. The only reason I didn't give it five stars because the author (editor?) regularly split sentences between two pages and sometimes several graphics broke things up even more to the point that I had to go back and re-read the beginning to remember what was being said. The end of chapters also gave the readers a slew of questions they should ask themselves that were fairly pointless as they were written. I can understand a bulleted list but 10-20 questions in paragraph format does nothing for me.

Great book. I used it for a college class about movies as an art form and this book really helped depict the great deal of art that goes into a movie.

I used this book for my film class and I found it very interesting and found myself not finding it too much of a chore because of this and I had the book version and had no problems of format with it whatsoever

Really cool book. Referenced many films I had seen before and a lot of ones that were new to me! Explained everything well with lots of images. Occasionally I would go find the actual clip from the films referenced and watch it for more clarity. Overall gave me a bunch of insight for someone who is not a film major but likes the subject.
