Mediocre horror film that falls into many of the modern horror tropes.
It's a decent horror film if taken on its own merits. Unfortunately, it's pretty impossible to watch without comparing it to the original. The biggest flaw in the 2005 version is that they tried to humanize the threat too much. As the film progresses, it becomes much more a film about a possessed person than a haunted house. They also make the common mistake in modern horror movies of over-explaining things too much. Honestly, I'm going into the movie expecting a house to be supernaturally possessed, my disbelief is suspended... You don't need to go and explain every little 'why' behind the events transpiring. Anyway, it's worth a watch if you just want a mediocre horror flick, but don't expect anything as interesting as the original. If this had been its own film and not a remake, I would have given it 3 stars, but they lose one by association.

not good. The actors are doing the best they can
The dialogue is... not good. The actors are doing the best they can. But if you want to see Ryan Reynolds shirtless a lot this movie is for you.

Terrible Remake
They go way over the top to soon show to much, really bad film making, less gore effects, less seen, more imagined and more of a build up story wise would have been better. Good cast though and well filmed.

Entertaining with good performances. A departure from the original story, but good creepy fun.
I would not compare it to the first one, and it is not remarkable, but the performances and pacing make it an entertaining supernatural flick. It has a decent creep quotient, and most of the scares are startle moments. I am generally fond of haunted houses, ghosts, and spooky stuff as opposed to slasher flicks and gore so I enjoyed it. It did make me want to go back and read the book again, if for no other reason than the room of flies.
