One of the most profound pieces of work
This book is one of the most profound pieces of work written. The sheer depth and perspectives of concepts presented by Bateson is just pure genius. TOTALLY worth having in the home library of every person to wishes to build an wider understanding of life and the labyrinth of interconnectedness around us.

Un punto di partenza irrinunciabile
La complessità e profondità del pensiero di Bateson sono ben catturato da questa raccolta di saggi, uno dei libri più letti dell'antropologo americano. Bateson era un anticipatore, un visionario lucido, uno studioso incapace di resistere ai limiti disciplinari, ai quali non assegnava alcun significato. Le piste che ci ha lasciato sono molte, ciascuna di esse spesso capace di aprire sentieri innovatori in diversi campi del sapere. Si pensi, ad esempio, al concetto di "doppio legame", che, estrapolato dal suo originario contesto (l'interpretazione della schizofrenia e la sua terapia) può fornire una chiave di lettura suggestiva della comunicazione di massa. Basta sostituire la madre con la TV (o un altro mezzo di comunicazione di massa) e il bimbo schizofrenico con lo spettatore. Il corollario sarebbe la grande somiglianza fra la situazione dello schizofrenico e quella dello spettatore nella società dello spettacolo... Non tutti i saggi sono ugualmente poderosi e/o chiari. Del resto, è una raccolta e non si può pretendere la perfezione e l'unità assolute. Si dovrebbe invece leggere questi saggi "a bocconi", a seconda dell'interesse del momento. E, soprattutto, rileggerli: avranno ogni volta qualcosa di nuovo da dire.

A thought provoking collection of essays. I really enjoyed reading it.

メタローグは1950年代に書かれたものも多いので、古いに決まっているのだが、現代的だ。そういう意味でも不思議な本。どこが古いのかが分かれば現代への知見になるのでは？

Bateson at his best
I read this book years ago when studying philosophy and psychology. I resently bought it as a gift to give to a young friend who was about to embark on his on philosophy studies. When it arrived I ended up re-reading it cover to cover and re-discovered the delight that I had when originally reading it all those years ago. Ageless! Needless to say, I kept this book and ended up buying another copy for the gift!
