How to Draw and Paint Fantasy Combat: A Step-by-Step Guide to Epic Combat Scenes

Great advice, especially concerning shifting weight of characters during combat.
This is one of those books that you illegally download, love it, and decide you need a physical copy. For legal reasons that's a joke. But seriously, great book. I especially liked the diagrams showing different ways that projectile objects affect the subject. Seriously, worth the money.

Take a fencing class or a "push-hands" Tai Chi workshop instead
Too many demos of portfolio pieces and not really any kind of coherent presentation on human movement as applied to the martial arts. There are a few pages at the end that attempt to demonstrate the kinetics involved in throwing spears and how projectiles impact the body; however, this section is much too skimpy and should have been the centerpiece of the book. If you get it used and cheap, you won't feel too bad about purchasing it.

Not quite what I expected...
If this book were presented as a straight-forward "How to Draw Fantasy Art" book, I would rate it higher. But the title is "How to Draw and Paint Fantasy Combat" and as such I found it did not live up to my expectations. What I expected was more on how to stage fight/battle scenes. There were 2 to 4 pages of stick figures in various action poses, but the rest of the book was more of a general Fantasy Art reference -- and, I might add, a pretty good one at that. More action/combat poses, more on staging multi-charcter battle scenes, and more on weapon design would have gone a long way to make this a really useful reference book. As it is, I already have a half dozen or so books that cover exactly the same things as this book and, in a couple of cases, cover combat/battle scenes better as well.

No action
This book was not useful to me at all . As to begain with there was not enough instruction on action poses or movement of objects to suggest how to depict combat in drawing . I was completely disappointed that I paid so much money for this book.

consider this
still going through it but I'll say this. If you've never drawn before this isn't the book for you. I'd suggest learning a few basics before this. However for what it is it is an excellent book. showing a variety of examples, paintings and more. there are a lot of elements in this book that i enjoy and will prove to be very useful.

Molto bene

Bellissimo libro ottimamente illustrato
