Does the cleaner leave a residue on the painting? If so, how should it be removed?

I found the product too strong to use on my vintage painting. It removed paint along with the dirt and smoke residue. I will not recommend it

Will this take off tar from cigarettes?

I am not an expert. In the 3 paintings I have restored, it removed most of the yellowing and brownish film. I believe some of the dirt was cigarette smoke but also mixed household dirt, grease from cooking and bad storage in an open garage attic in the 50's. I used Kotton Klenser Oil Painting Restoration Kit exactly as the instruction and the paintings look fresh, bright and clean.

may I use this product "Kotton Klenser" on an oil painting that hasn't been varnished?

No, however, you could try it on a small inconspicuous corner of the oil painting with a gentle touch. There are more gentle ways to clean an oil painting. If the painting really needs to be cleaned, look up the "spit cleaning" method on Google. Saliva has the enzyme amylase that even professionals at museums have used. It is safest and there is little risk in hurting an unvarnished oil painting and would not remove varnish from a varnished painting.
