Book Review - Life along the Inner Coast: A Naturalist's Guide to the Sounds, Inlets, Rivers, and Intracoastal Waterway from Nor
My husband and I travel the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway from Maryland to Florida every year when we head south for the winter and then back home in May.I thought this book would be a very cool reference for what can be found along the waterway. After paging through the book looking for different spots along our route, I found myself disappointed that it was not organized geographically as one travels the Waterway. The book is still a good reference but not as good as I'd hoped. The title suggests (to me) that it is organized along the geographic lines of the ICW.

Highly readable and comprehensive
This book is a great guide to the natural history of the ICW--that is, it's a guide to the plants, animals, and habitats found along the Atlantic Intercoastal Waterway from Florida to Virginia. It's quite readable as well. The information in it is quite applicable to almost any spot, and includes more than the immediately obvious "sexy" animals like dolphins and birds. It also provides in-depth information about invertebrates and plants. The information is arranged by habitat, so you can choose to read it from cover to cover or pick a particular topic, for example mudflats, and read up on that. There are no photos, but the line drawings are a nice touch. Unlike field guides that exist only to help you name what you're seeing, this book explains more about the organisms and ecosystems of the ICW, along with providing help with identification. As such it's a hardcover and not meant to come along on a hike in a backpack.
