While you can use a Lansky sharpener without a stand, holding in one hand a sharpening with the other (I’ve done it) or clamping it in a vise, this stand makes it much easier- especially if you screw it down to something. I have a sharpening station in my home shop, where I keep stones, jigs and other sharpening supplies, and this is simply screwed down and the end of a the workbench there.

Some type of stand is pretty much necessary to avoid awkward positioning and hand cramps... clamping this one works pretty well and it's an inexpensive portable solution.The connection between the stand and the clamp is very loose (probably on purpose) and although it is secure, it just feels unstable to me. I put a wrap of tape on the top of the stand to tighten it up and make it 'feel' better to me.The C-clamp version looked interesting but the clamp points are very small. The wide base on the Universal Mount makes it very stable.The base and upright unscrew (too easily) and it can be stored in a standard Lansky box if you want to put it away. I opted to screw the base to a small platform that can be clamped or screwed anywhere (not just clamped to the edge of a table) and I put a dab of glue in the post hole to make a semi-permanent unit. It's not as compact this way but I can pull it off the shelf, set it anywhere and it's ready to use!!

Seems like a good idea but here are my dislikes; being aluminum it's way to light to hold all but the smallest knives on its own so you're gonna have to mount it to something, OK, so that's what I did. Next up, to mount your clamp to this you really have to align the holes carefully and even so it's a snug fit. After all that flipping it around still takes time. For me, it's better to hold the clamp/knife in such a way that I get both sides without all the switches around. Just as great and much less time.

I've had the sharpener before but never the mount it definitely helps reduce hand cramps while in use, it also has enough weight to the stand to not have to screw it into one place.

Was fine without for over 30 years. Was given a homemade knife that required an adjustment to reach the edge to be able to apply the angle I wanted. Not disappointed. A welcome addition to my kit.
