A fun book of interesting painting exercises to limber up the mind and creativity. The book is not a "how-to" for watercolor painting or a guide to painting realistically--it is more a "free your mind" kind of painting exercise book. The exercises are fun and Ms. Monteil's illustration samples are really interesting and beautiful.

Awesome exercises to great patterns and backgrounds
I'm so excited to try all the exercises in this book. My New Year's resolution is to paint again. (It's pretty much been since college...over 20 years ago). I have done 3 but this book really will stretch my techniques-mostly backgrounds and patterns that will be a great start to details. The one I am most excited about is the tutorial on how to make a repeat all over pattern. This book jumps right into the exercises and doesn't cover brushes and types of paints etc. it is really about guided experimentation and different ways to create patterns and a few images. The photo is of my version of the gradient wash technique featured in the book.

Totally not what I was looking for
I was looking for a source demonstrating brush techniques. I was sorely disappointed. These are 1 paragraph directions with a 1 page example to paint silly things. I'm not sure even a child would do these. It will be a pretty cover in the Thrift store I sent it off to.

Makes me want to make pretty art!
Cover is so pretty, and Ana's art prompts are really fun.

Really?
If I had seen this in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it. It looks like assignments I gave to my students when I taught third grade.

Love this series
Great books, full of ideas and exercises. My only complaint is that the paper is no where near thick enough to try paint in the book itself as suggested.

I bought this book at the same time as I bought The Pencil Playbook and I am sure once I get around to using it properly it will be just as entertaining as The Pencil Playbook but to be honest I haven't yet got into this book properly but I will given time and will look forward to doing so.
