Dorman 973-004 Front HVAC Blower Motor Resistor Compatible with Select Cadillac / Chevrolet / GMC Models

My 2002 Chevy Suburban with the flex-fuel 5.7L had the issue with the heat/AC blower where it would only blow air on settings 3,4 & 5. Upon removing the blower resistor there were some burned tracks on the alumina substrate and the dry film solder mask was flaking off in various places. The original OEM design printed resistive tracks on a white ceramic substrate called alumina that conducts and spreads heat pretty well but it is electrically insulative. Either the blower motor started generating excessive friction in the bearings resulting in higher current that burned out the tracks on the lower two fan settings or the dry-film solder mask (green coating on the resistor board) was somehow compromised and moisture may have led to the demise of the printed resistive tracks through corrosion then localized over-heating and then burned out. The green dry-film solder mask was charred where the tracks had failed. This resistor block from Dorman fit perfectly and now all five speeds work fine. Just in case I was getting excessive bearing drag, I pulled the blower, removed the squirrel cage blower from the shaft and pulled the motor out of the plastic housing. I flushed the motor with rubbing alcohol and all kinds of graphite brush dust crud came out. I dried it well then lubricated the plain sleeve bearings with 3-IN-1 motor oil and re-assembled the motor into the plastic housing and gently tapped the squirrel cage fan back onto the motor shaft. Be sure to support the motor shaft on the bottom with a punch or other small cylindrical metal rod on the bottom of the motor or you can ruin the bearings. Be sure the motor spins freely by hand before re-installing. This new design appears to be rugged and less susceptible to environmental damage. NOTE: The Dorman part has the embedded relay on the opposite side of the part than the original. If you find the part doesn't fit like the original, rotate it around 180 degrees then the angled tabs line up exactly with the mounting points in the fan shroud/plenum.

I recently encountered the dreaded no fan on speed 1 or 2 in my 2000 Silverado and I took a chance on this part being the culprit. Well, it was, and now I have restored all my fan speeds!!! I am a decent driveway mechanic, but beware that on my truck, the screws that held this part in place and the screws that hold the fan motor assembly in place were not metric. Everything else on these trucks are metric, but for some reason those easy to access screws weren't, so due to me lacking tiny american sockets, I had to get creative and that took this 5 minute job and made it a good hour all said and done. But I was nice and thorough about it and even vacuumed up any leaf matter in the area I was working in and cleaned out my cabin air filters while I was at it, which added some time. Quick, simple, and the fix for anyone who has lost a fan speed or two/three. No need to worry about getting a new HVAC control unit or replacing the fan. This resistor is probably the culprit.

Not a big fan of writing poor reviews, esp when half the fault lies with amazon for saying that this part fits my truck (2002 chevy 2500hd 4x4 duramax) when it does not fit. As several other reviews have stated, you need to be careful with this part. It has been produced to be the correct part (ie both electrical connections fit properly and it works once plugged in) but the mounting design is indeed backward. This part slides into place and a mounting plate (installed w/ truck on old resistor) is meant to be removed from the old part, slide over the top of this part, and then screwed back into place. That mounting plate will not fit over the top of this resistor because the molded shape is different, and even if it did, it would still not work because the two holes you see in the picture on amazon are NOT the mounting holes, they are meant to line up with tabs on the mounting plate, but they do not line up. Not even close. I was able to create a mounting plate of my own to offset the holes and mount the resistor and will keep the original plate for future replacement if needed. Correct part, in-correct shape and thumbs down to amazon for not updating their automotive fit chart to reflect this problem.

Resistor worked fine but didnt line up and match with the oem part (2004 Silverado). I was pissed but didnt want to got through the hassle of returning so i screwed in one side and zip tied the other. you cant see it as its under the glove box so who cares, as long as i have my speeds back.

Perfect match - for my application - 2001 GMC Yukon XL For years I've been driving around without the #1 fan speed - had 2 - 5 but not 1 - It wasn't a beg deal - but ....... in the summer I do like how cold the A/C gets - but would like the lowest fan speed I ordered this back in Dec of 2015 - and have just now today (3/14/2016) had time to install it - - although the time thing is really on 20 - 30 minutes for me - the resistor is located closest to the passenger side - but actually to the left front of the blower - - the most difficult part was disconnecting the actual power from the back of the blower - (big hands and fingers - also arthritis in my thumbs) over all I would give this a 1 star out of 5 for difficulty - - as it's easy, easy easy

Made wrong, have to send it back. Plugged in and works fine but the plastic is cast backwards as it is orientated to the original part. 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD.
