Charles Bukowski examines cats and his childhood in You Get So Alone at Times , a book of poetry that reveals his tender side. The iconic tortured artist/everyman delves into his youth to analyze its repercussions. “The Walt Whitman of Los Angeles.”—Joyce Carol Oates “He brought everybody down to earth, even the angels.”—Leonard Cohen, songwriter "well, that's just the way it is..." sometimes when everything seems at its worst when all conspires and gnaws and the hours, days, weeks years seem wasted-- stretched there upon my bed in the dark looking upward at the ceiling I get what many will consider an obnoxious thought: it's still nice to be Bukowski. Review: Yup - Bukowski really was an excellent writer. Like so many, I've never been all that big into poetry. Turns out, i hasn't yet found the style that I liked. Bukowski novels are great, but his poetry collections are something unique. Poems about real life, short stories, essays here and there. HiRec. Review: A good introduction to Bukowksi - I'm not a poetry fanatic, but I'm trying to get into it. This was one of two books by Bukowski that I bought to do so (the other being The Last Night of the Earth Poems ). I found both very enjoyable and have moved on to read some of his other works since then. These were the first enjoyable books of poetry I'd read in my life. I would recommend them for anyone who is trying to get into poetry as a hobby, especially if (like me) you are not an English major or aspiring poet, and thus are more able to take these for what they are, rather than evaluate their literary merit from established standards. In other words, I connected with this book on a personal level, not an academic level, and I encourage you to read it if you would like to do so too.

A good introduction to Bukowksi

Perfect
These crude and raw feelings are exactly what we need when we don’t find anything real around. It’s life as it is, from the perspective of a man that lived so much, and given in the most honest way he could. Sometimes I felt sad, sometimes I felt his joy, his sarcasm and his irony. I felt I lived a whole different life after reading these poems, and it was such an adventurous life, in its own, unique way. I guess this is something one can read after living the ups and downs of life, and I’m sure I’ll read and understand it differently 10 years from now.

I can't remember a time when a book made me feel dirty and drunk from just reading it
Reading Bukowski is a dangerous affair; one should probably wear a mind condom. Seriously, I can't remember a time when a book made me feel dirty and drunk from just reading it, and I don't mean that "drunk with love" Lifetime crap. I almost joined AA, I tell you. Now I need a shower too. On a more serious note, Buk is at his best when his cynicism and misanthropy gets the best of him, "Relentless as the tarantula" and "Drive through hell" are prime examples of this. In a way, his genius stems from letting the reader soak in his world without having him/her feel utterly depressed. It's mean, blunt, dark, direct. This would he explain why he gets along so well with cats. A total riot!

Poems about life and loss, and, oh yes, drinking.
Filled with poems about life, love, loss, happiness, failure, and of course, drinking. Regardless of where you are in life, there will be at least one poem that will resonate with you. Bukowski was a talented writer and storyteller and had a way of making even mundane things interesting. I originally purchased the book because some of its contents were read on the movie Beautiful Creatures, and I was intrigued.

Bukowski explores the darkest part of all of us
Bukowski is gifted when it comes to allowing the readers to explore their darkest territories through his poetry. His words created by experience dive deep into sanity and insanity. The not-so subtle hypocrisy is genius and his stance on the world around him offers vision into humanity and the oblivion surrounding us. He truly is a master at his craft.
