The Shattered Lantern: Rediscovering a Felt Presence of God

Must read
Wow. This is a book you sit and take notes with. It is a book that has you frequently pause to meditate on the passage you just read. The writing and ideas are up there with Bonhoeffer.

Wonderful book, but there are editing errors
This book is wonderful. It's the future of Christianity. The author is a Catholic priest who presents the situation of modern Christianity in a generous and compassionate way. I have bought several other books of his since reading this one. However, this particular book was printed somehow with all sorts of editing errors included, and they need to do a reprint. There are no corrected versions out yet. You could read it anyhow if you have confidence that you will understand what is being said despite sometimes a word missing, etc., and if you don't mind that. It is just an error in the printing house. Unfortunate, because this is a wonderful book. People who are encouraged by Pope Francis should love this book. Just be tolerant of it's errors.

A challenging analysis of the contradictions and failures of present culture in its practice of ignoring and discounting God's existence.

Excellent!
This book addresses three of the key maladies of our contemporary experience - narcissism, excessive pragmatism, and restlessness. Each is addressed in depth and, after a discussion of the benefits of spirituality through the eyes of John of the Cross, Rolheiser offers the practice of contemplation as a needed way to address our needs. Excellent!

The Shattered Lantern; rediscovering a Felt Presence of God
Fr. Ron Rohlheiser is one of my favorite authors. He is able to see life from a fresh perspective and give meaning to everyday images. His books, although deeply profound, are an easy read as he shares his unique outlook. Reading his books leaves one with a sense of having had a spiritual experience, with food for future thought to "chew on." Sharing snipits from his own life gives Fr. Ron's books a personal feel and invites you "in" to his spirituality.

Understood spirituality
Out of the many books on spirituality and mysticism I have read, this may be the best because of Rolheiser's ability to present the depth of spirituality in such understanabale language. Some spiritual authors write beyond my understanding - not true of Richard Rolheiser. I have felt that way about all that I have read of his. In the same vein you may also want to check out the work of Richard Rohr. Both of these writers have a way of taking you off the surface of your faith where we spend so much time to depths you wish you knew about long before.

I know the author and belong to a small faith ...
I know the author and belong to a small faith sharing group that plans to read and share on this book starting in September. Therefore, I have not yet read the text. However, having read many of Fr. Ron's articles and taken classes from him, I am sure that the book will be worth recommending to others. One of our group is the person who suggested we use "The Shattered Lantern".
