great gameplay, kind of dumb story
This is a game with great gameplay(most of the time) and three great characters. It falters however with writing that honestly is rather predictable, voice acting which is fine for the main cast(mostly), and some writing choices that are extremely childish in design.I really like the gameplay, I do, going on the quest was a ton of fun, along with going through dungeons, and fighting enemies. It does falter in the fact that this really should've been a multiplayer game. While you can edit the AI of your party, it doesn't change that fact that in later parts of the game, your party will go down faster than a roller coaster. I remember one boss with a whip attack, where the best strategy was to jump over the whips, my companions didn't do that, ever.I like Reisz, Angela, and Hawkeye, I think their good characters with good backstories, and such. I primarily chose them because they had names I could take seriously, and actually looked visually pleasing. The other characters, not so much, Charlotte looks...okay, she's kind of cute, but her voice is annoying, and so is her character honestly(she's too arrogant I find, or something along those lines), Kevin looks fine, but I can't take his name seriously, not that Kevin is a bad name, but it clashes with his appearance SO MUCH, and I just can't take him seriously(his voice actor isn't very good either), and the other character whose name I can't remember just looks like a generic protagonist. The writing of the game is rather...lacking, it's interesting at first until you find out where it's headed, which to be fair I think the end goal is different depending on who you pick, as implied by some of the artwork I've seen. The problem is getting those other stories would require playing as the other characters like Kevin or Charlotte. I was actually curious to find out what might happen if I chose Angela as my main character along with having Bland Guy in the group, so I could theoretically see what else the game has to offer, but than I remembered that this is a game with cats that speak in cat puns, a generic vampire, and several TERRIBLE voice performances, and I'm suddenly hesitant to even keep playing with how little I'm invested in the stakes(20 hours in)To touch on the voice acting quick, the main three that I chose as well as bland guy, are pretty good. Shout out to Brittany Cox as the voice Reisz. The problem I have is that it often feels like there wasn't much in terms of direction for the voices, like a character might be using one voice, but then their voice might sound completely different, which I know voices change when different emotions come into play, but this just sounds TOO different, ya know.I did actually enjoy what I played, keeping in mind at some point I was just wanting to get the game over with, and then stopped playing it briefly, only to never pick it up again. Which I might one day, but I really wasn't enjoying it enough to keep going passed the 20 hour mark, as I had a lot of other games I felt like playing instead. I recommend buying it at a discounted price if you're interested.

Enjoying it
Item was delivery prefect. So far the game is great and really liking the the game play. Able to change up the character types, just wish there was a little different in the pattern of where I wanted to go within the game.

A Remake Done Right - Masterful
I never had the pleasure of playing the original game, called Seiken Densetsu 3 (and was disinclined even after it came out as part of the Collection of Mana, since I heard it contains some pretty rough bugs), but had always wanted to. Secret of Mana, this game's predecessor, stood out with its vibrant visuals, gorgeous music, excellent sound design, and odd but satisfying combat. No doubt its successor improved on that. What luck that Nintendo would decide to not only give us access to the original, but to rebuild it for a modern console. And what a job they did. Trials of Mana provides a wonderful experience, and I hope will be viewed as a blueprint for how 2D to 3D action RPG remakes should work. Its soundscape soars, almost all of the remixes clear enhancements to the original tunes. It is beautiful, the original's areas lovingly recreated in 3D. It just feels so alive, so colorful, and playful. The combat system presents a fair challenge without being frustrating, and feels like a treat to play. The controls are excellent and responsive. It has ample replayability, especially considering that you can't see all of the content without playing through at least twice (each time with a set of three completely different characters). There is quite a bit to track down if you enjoy scavenger hunts in your games, though none of it is essential to completing the game.If you enjoy action RPGs, you could do far worse. And especially if you have any interest in the Seiken Densetsu line of games, this comes hugely recommended.

Best PS4 port on the Switch.
Part of me is annoyed that one of Square's most ignored games has gotten such a lackluster remake. I usually hate remakes for this reason but this one is actually really great on the Switch despite Square's lack of ambition.Of course since this remake looks so basic it doesn't tax the Switch hardware much at all, so it's perfect to port. There aren't nearly as many compromises here as other Switch ports. There's no blurry filter over the whole screen as with DOOM or Dragon Quest XI. Texture quality looks sharp too. The only real downgrade here is the 30fps on Switch. The game itself is a lot of fun. More fun to play than the original in almost every way (but no more multiplayer). The SNES version had slow sluggish combat and movement by comparison. The English voice acting is really bad in the remake but like most Square-Enix games the Japanese language option is mercifully included so you don't have to waste precious space downloading it like in a Nintendo published title. You could also just turn the voice volume down to zero in options and read all the dialog in peace like it's 1995.I really appreciate the tone of the story and the colorful world presented here as well. The game moves at a brisk pace too, you'll probably finish it in 40 hours (but there are also optional bosses, multiple endings, a new game+, and 3 different final dungeons if you want more). There's no DLC or junk like that, this is a very complete game. It's awesome.
