Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983)
Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) is a motion picture version of the original TV series, Twilight Zone (1959), and features remakes of three of the original episodes. OK, let's look at the filmmakers first, an impressive bunch:Producers:Steven Spielberg & John LandisDirectors:John Landis (The Prologue & Time Out segment)Steven Spielberg (Kick the Can segment)Joe Dante (It's A Good Life segment)George Miller (Nightmare at 20,000 Feet segment)Writers:John Landis: (The Prologue & Time Out segment)George Clayton Johnson, Melissa Mathison, Richard Matheson (Kick the Can segment)Jerome Bixby, Richard Matheson (It's A Good Life Segment)Richard Matheson (Nightmare at 20,000 Feet segment)The above have created such iconic works as An American Werewolf in London (1981), Duel (1971), E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Gremlins (1984), The Howling (1981), I Am Legend (2007), Jaws (1975), Jurassic Park (1993) and so much more. Then there is the stellar cast, which will be highlighted within the following synopsis.Prologue:The film begins with a couple of friends (Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks) driving at night and the driver begins to play the urban legend game where he switches his lights off whilst driving; the first vehicle to flash their lights in warning gets chased by him. However, he backs out and they discuss episodes of The Twilight Zone until something weird happens ... Narrator: Burgess Meredith.Segment One: ''Time Out''Stars Vic Morrow, Doug McGrath, Charles Hallahan, Steven Williams, Stephen Bishop, Burgess Meredith (Narrator). A racist bigot who admits to hating Jews, Blacks and Asians is transported back in time to different periods: Nazi Germany, an American KKK Rally, and Vietnam.Segment Two: ''Kick the Can''Stars Scatman Crothers, Bill Quinn, Martin Garner, Selma Diamond, Helen Shaw, Murray Matheson, Peter Brocco, Priscilla Pointer, Burgess Meredith (Narrator). An old man gives the residents of a retirement home their most favourite wishes.Segment Three: ''It's A Good Life''Stars Kathleen Quinlan, Jeremy Licht, Kevin McCarthy, Patricia Barry, William Schallert, Nancy Cartwright, Dick Miller, Burgess Meredith (Narrator). A young woman gives a lift to a mysterious boy and ends up in an alternate reality.Segment Four: ''Nightmare at 20,000 Feet''Stars John Lithgow, Abbe Lane, Donna Dixon, John Dennis Johnston, Larry Cedar, Christina Nigra, Eduard Franz, Jeffrey Weissman, Burgess Meredith (Narrator). A passenger on a plane sees a goblin creature on the wing, trying to tear the plane apart, but he can't convince anyone else that it is happening.Epilogue:Sees an ambulance driver (Dan Aykroyd) on the same stretch of road and is linked to the prologue ...The film performed well at the box office and there was a novelization written by Robert Bloch, which does not follow the order of segments relating to the completed movie; Bloch was given the screenplay beforehand, and before it was edited. Jerry Goldsmith provides the music. I really enjoyed this anthology film and place it up with the best of them, including Creepshow (1982) and Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (1990).

Twilight Zone: The Movie.
Although this is described as a movie, I seem to remember that each of these segments was part of a series of separate programmes broadcast in the dim and distant past. This series had the same name as this "film" and had different stories each time. The one I remember most vividly is the one where John Lithgoe, later to star in Third Rock From The Sun, was a disturbed passenger in an aircraft. During a severe thunderstorm, the aircraft was in danger of being ripped apart by a strange being outside the plane. Everybody thought John Lithgoe's character had suffered a severe mental trauma and he was restrained by the crew. See this film. It is worth it for this section alone. The other stories are all different, but still rotate round the supernatural. One is in an old people home (expect the unexpected) and another is in a house miles from anywhere but is at the side of an American highway. Where else?Highly recommended.

do you want to see something REALLY scary?
Quite dated I have to say, but none-the-less a great film. Dan Akroyd's intro sequence is entertaining, and ultimately scary, the old people getting young a bit smaltzy but hypnotic, the gremlin on the plane is made very dramatic by John Lithgow's hysterics, and my favourite is the little boy in the cartoon horror house, followed up the cautionary tale of the bigot transported back in time to Nazi Germany. Like I say a bit dated effects-wise, and a bit preachy in places, but four (or is it five) great little movies, directed by John Landis, George Millar, Joe Dante and of course Steven Spielberg.

some lessons learnt
this film leaves you educated as well as entertained, i loved all of the offerings on this, the best being vic morrow in the first film about a racist bigot with a huge chip on his shoulder getting some instant karma and the spielberg film about an old folks home and a story of old age and memories of healthier happier times with a twist,i work in an old folks home and get this 100%....a lovely little tale. the rst of this is good too especially the last film about a plane passenger having the worst time of his life thanks to a wee goblin on the wing of the aircraft....or was it????

but the other stories are fun.
The copy I received seemed to be Region 1, but it played on my DVD player anyway. The Steven Spielberg segment is a bit sickly sentimental, but the other stories are fun.

Fabulosa!!!
