Standard filters remove particles with sizes of 5 microns or greater. HEPA filters remove particles down to 0.3 microns. While the difference may not seem to be that large, consider the fact that density of airborne particles tends to rapidly increase with decreasing size. A vacuum with a HEPA filter may easily remove twice as many particles than a vacuum without. The difference is in "smell of dust" in air which is not HEPA-filtered. You do not see particles under 30 microns in size, but you sense them as smell. This level of filtration makes a big difference, and this is the reason why removal of dangerous substances (such as lead) requires HEPA filtration. Even for routine woodworking, HEPA is a big investment in your health. Festool dust extractors are equipped with double filtration, 5 microns filtration by the material of the bag, and 0.3 microns by this filter.It is a replacement part for factory installed filter in Midi and Mini. Festool recommends that it is replaced every 6 months if the vacuum is used for professional work. Weekend warriors can wait for several years between replacements.

Had to purchase these for our Festool Mini Vacs. They do the job required by EPA law. Unfortunately they do restrict some suction but are still good for machine sanding. Not so great for general vacuuming. Not a fault of the filter, but of the vac.
