The Stories of Eva Luna

Engaging stories
Stories were quirky, sometimes dark but consistently engaging. Well written and imaginative. I enjoyed each one. Allende is one of my favorite authors and she excelled my expectations

Intermittent Flashes of Brilliance for Eva Luna's stories
Let me make it clear from the start, I just love all of Isabel Allende's books. I just love some a little more than others. Kudos to the translator who keeps the power of Allende's descriptions and beautiful descriptions with tender attention to the subtleties of effecting any translation as being as true as possible to the original in spirit. First I read Eva Luna, so I had to read the Stories of Eva Luna. Some of the included short stories assume the reader has previously read Eva Luna, or they lose impact. Other stories seem to stand alone and do not rely on the preceding book. I preferred these standalone stories and feel the sequencing of the stories could have flowed better thematically. I love the idea of being able to digest a stimulating tale or two before going to sleep, especially when they are well written and provocative. No living author provides this kind of insight into the female psyche and sensuality. It seems to takes a well-educated latina raised outside of the USA to show how there is life, glowing life, passion and struggle below the border both literally and figuratively.

Isabel Allende's operatic short story "La Venganza", "The Vengeance"
One of the short stories of Eva Luna by Isabel Allende (La Venganza) "The Vengeance"is the basis for a new opera by Lee Holdridge, called "Dulce Rosa". It will receive a world premiere in Santa Monica next Spring, conducted by Placido Domingo, who heads Los Angeles Opera.Since I talk to groups about upcoming operas, and since this will be a completely new work to audiences, I began my preparation by reading the short story. It is so short that I wondered how the composer managed to write a full-length opera. It is only seven and one-half pages. Then I read the story and I understood. The story is concise, fascinating, haunting and has all the necessary ingredients needed for a genuine musical drama of the highest level. Story details should be left to the reader, as some events are unexpected. I appreciate the service provided by Amazon and am enjoying reading the other short stories in the book, but my primary interest was in this one particular tale. Ms. Allende's personal history enables her to tell this story with an understanding that only comes from her own life and that makes the tale even more fascinating. To your readers, I can only say read the story and see or hear the opera following its premiere next year. You, too, will find it haunting and memorable.

A Gem!
This collection was my introduction to the writing of Isabel Allende, and it's still among my favorites of her work. I rarely read fiction in translation because it often lacks the ineffable spirit that made the writing so good in its original language - but this translation is lovely! I like the work so well that this is the third or fourth copy I've bought to give to others.

Loved it! Loved it! Isabel Allende does it again.
I am a fan of Isabel Allende novels, and these short stories do not disappoint! Each one is beautiful to read, and well translated. In the book, a storyteller spins 23 compelling tales for her lover, each one very different from the others. These stand-alone stories are only about ten pages long, so make for excellent bedtime reading, or an engrossing distraction for commuters. They may be short, but in true Allende style, each tale quickly draws you in, informs, makes you think, and makes you feel. Unmissable!

Just brilliant
I first read this about 20 years ago and bought a copy for my wife - but naturally I thought it would be interesting to take a look. And then I was hooked - these stories are magical, beguiling, covering the range of human characteristics both good and very bad. Beautifully written - tales of love, and hope, and enchantment. I cannot imagine a better book to have by your bedside table for the last 15 minutes of your day.

Wonderful!!!
Images conjured of colourful places and people from warm climes. Her ingenuity in creating rich stories, each so unique, was a pleasure to pick up every night before bed. I've recommended this several times already.
