Oil Painter's Bible: An Essential Reference for the Practicing Artist (Artist's Bibles)

This extremely durable spiral-bound book, with heavy wipe-clean covers, is amazing. It is so well and engagingly written, you can just sit and read it for pleasure. Or you can use it as a reference book, it is so well organized. Or it can be your tutor in learning to paint with oils. But it also is a great course in art appreciation -> I have not yet painting a simple stroke, but have read it from cover to cover, and now I can't wait to get to an art gallery to inspect the paintings, because I have such an enhanced new appreciation for the various techniques that go into an oil painting.

I've been painting for over 20 years and have many painting technique books. When an artist friend suggested this book I thought twice before buying yet another book - but I gave it a look and liked it very much. This is the BEST book - very helpful both to beginners and experienced artists. My copy now lives on the cabinet I use as my palette area and I refer to it often. Go ahead and buy this book, do yourself a favor - it's full of useful information and very well written. Also spiral bound so lays flat. The Oil Painter's Bible is my all time favorite, most useful painters reference book ever. Saying I highly recommend it is an understatement.

This book is very straightforward as a great guide for beginners. I love the book contents; It's detailed from the material to painting technique. Also the bookbinding is very intersting; It's like a quality notebook. This is not a long boring book. It gives you a quick shot of painting knowledge. When you finish reading it, which woulg not take so long, you will feel like being ready for painting something and move to the next painting book!

I recently spent a week at a folk art school in NC taking a week of oil painting classes for beginners. Returning home I went to my local library looking for something that I could relate to as well as my instructor and found The Oil Painter's Bible. It has so much information for the beginner that I ordered the book and refer to it every time I practice my painting. It is easy to follow and gives explanations that the novice can understand. Once I used it I knew that I had to have it for my permanent collection of books. Great book. Highly recommend it.

There is a lot of good information in this book. I knew most of the information in this book. Definitely learned some new tips.

I purchased this book as it was required for a University Painting course I am taking.Our professor advised us this book might cost $50 new, but thank god for Amazon! I paid penny's on the dollar and couldn't be happier. My product was just barely used and was well worth the money spent.The seller shipped promptly and it arrived quick!This is a great book for beginners who want to grasp the idea of painting, as well as folks who are intermediate but could use some outside insight.

I have several of the books from this series, including the Watercolor, Pastel, and Drawing Bibles. When I wanted to learn to oil paint, this was a must-buy for me. I appreciate the color photographs, the way the chapters are organized, the focus on technique, and the spiral binding that makes the book lay flat. For beginners, these books are great and I can see that I'll refer back to it frequently (like I do with the others) just for reference on techniques later on.

I am a newbie at Oils, but have used acrylics and watercolors. I needed to know what supplies I needed and how to get used to using them safely. Nice photos and walk-throughs on paintings.

I am a beginner and I bought this book as a reference and introduction to all the aspects of oil painting.The book is divided into 4 sections: Materials; Colour: Techniques and Subjects.The chapters within these sections are brief, but potential buyers should be aware that it isquite a small book: 180 pages, size 6" by 8".Calling it a " bible " is perhaps overstating it.Buyers should also be aware that it does state on the contents page that parts have previously beenpublished in " The Encyclopedia of Oil Painting Techniques", "100 Great Oil Painting Tips", and" The Oil Painters Pocket Palette " ( this last title is maybe a more accurate title).I can understand some annoyance if you've already got these books and expected something differentThe book is well made and the content clear and well laid out.The reproductions of paintings within, though small are pleasing to the eye.I've actually used it whilst painting,and the spiral-bound version is great for this - and you can easily wipe off any splatter!Overall I think it's a great introduction to the broad subject of oil painting for the novice artist.And I got it second-hand for a great low price.

As per title, its ok and will live happily with my other books

I bought this book 18 months ago and have found it to be worth its weight in gold. It has everything the amateur artist could need for getting started. The only criticism I have is the brevity of the explanations which I felt could be in slightly more detail,(but perhaps that,s just me being a bit picky). I refer to it on a regular basis.

Excellent book. If you are starting oil painting and find getting the right colour this is nthe best book I have found I hasve made great progress with my painting thanks to this book.Highly recommended for beginers and more advanced.Brilliant buy.
