Beryl Cook: The Bumper Edition

I so enjoyed looking through this book - an absolute joy. Beryl died in 2008 but what a wonderful legacy to leave? Her pictures represent the simple things of life and so many of her paintings show the things we all do day to day - shopping in Tesco , the checkout girl that catches your eye.Beryl worked in the pub trade and also as a landlady and many of her paintings catch the moments from that environment. She was known of course for her caricatures- the thickly set women, the younger set nearly always showing a bit of thigh for titivation and her usage of large hands, sometimes holding an oversized cigarette! It's all very eye-catching and thoroughly amusing. A great gift for sure and she was such a grounded icon, even if the `snobby' art world refuse to give her the credit she deserves. The same has happened Jack Vettriano of course. If you draw pictures of match stick men you are a genius apparently?To buy an original of her paintings can cost anything up to £75,000, whilst a Vettriano classic has already been bought for £3,000 and then sold for £750,000! You don't have to pay £75,000 for a Beryl Cook - it's in here for £20!

Loved Beryl Cook for years. To have most of her works in one book is an absolute joy! Everytime u look at her paintings, u see something new that u hadn't spotted before. Genius woman, self taught, with an uncanny eye for making the ordinairy extraordinairy.
