Think the days of bootleggers, backwoods stills and 'white lightning' are over? Not a chance! It's a multi-million dollar industry. But perhaps more importantly to the moonshiners, it's a tradition dating back hundreds of years, passed down to them from their forefathers. It's part of their history and culture. While this practice is surprisingly alive and well, it's not always legal.Discovery Channel's all-new series MOONSHINERS tells the story of those who brew their shine - often in the woods near their homes using camouflaged equipment - and the local authorities who try to keep them honest. Viewers will witness practices rarely, if ever, seen on television including the sacred rite of passage for a moonshiner - firing up the still for the first time. They will also meet legends, including notorious moonshiner Marvin 'Popcorn' Sutton.

An entertaining series
Moonshiners is a very entertaining series. It has gone up-market considerably since this first season. The DVD doesnโt play in Australia. The sales blurb stated that the DVD was multi format but itโs region 1 which doesnโt play in region 4, however, I managed to convert it to mp4 and download it to my hddโฆ otherwise, the DVD was as new as described.

TICKLE FOR PRESIDENT!
I completely enjoyed this DVD set. The characters are awesome and genuine. My grandparents had a tobacco farm that is right in middle of the area where this was filmed which added to my watching enjoyment, pausing many times and pointing out the places I knew.It is entertaining because they do indeed believe that what they are doing is a heritage that needs to be preserved.I do recall coming upon abandoned still sites while hunting and fishing in the woods at Grandma's house during my youth and asking "What is all this stuff doing this far back in the woods?" My cousins would answer " 'Shinin." .Now I doubt that these ol' boys are actually making moonshine for the camera crews (probably just making hot water) but the methods, landscape, history and characters make this DVD set a must buy. TICKLE FOR PRESIDENT!

Entertaining but less realistic than season 2
I admit I love this show even though it isn't real. I watched season 2 live on TDC then bought season 1 here, and they clearly thought out how to make season 2 seem more real. In season 1 they make a huge deal how bootleggers aren't allowed out of the car etc ... But they pull right up even though there's a camera crew filming them at 4:00am? With no previous communication with the moonshiners? And some of the dialogue in season 1 just seems more rehearsed and amateurish. Still happy I bought it though, it's a great balance of live action, history, and how-to technical details.

Never thought I'd get sucked into this show.
There's something compelling about it. I'm fascinated by the process of distillation, and these guys are masters at it (except Tickle - he's just fun to watch because he's like a car wreck you can't tear your eyes away from.) I find the "bad guys" far more engaging to watch than the law officers that are trying to shut them down. In season 2, the focus is a lot less on the law, and more on the 'shiners.Very entertaining and worth a look.

Nothing like shining while drinkin some shine
I bought this season to learn how to make moonshine..and I'll tell you what.....It's fantastic! The stuff I got goin now makes my vision a little dark whcih makes it a bit difficult to watch the show but what the hell, their accents and hillbilly antics leave me tickling my chest hairs every afternoon. Do yourself a favor and pour yourself a glass of moonshine while watching it.
