McGraw-Hill's Spanish Picture Dictionary

I purchased several of these to use in a weekly Spanish class that I teach to 3rd-6th graders. My decision was heavily influenced by the fact that the dictionaries have the phonetic pronunciation included for each word. Curiously, most childrens dictionaries omit this very important feature. Unless you are fluent in Spanish, you/your child will need help with correct pronunciation. Otherwise you will find yourselves saying jab-on instead of ha-BON for soap and pronouncing amarillo (yellow) like the city in Texas instead of correctly saying a-ma-REE-yo. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is that one must flip to the back of the book to find the pronunciation. The book would be much easier to use if each word had the phonetic pronunciation on the same page instead of in the back. With well over 1,000 words included, some pages are really packed, so I can understand why that might not be very practical. Also, Spanish varies slightly from country to country. Most Hispanic people that I am likely to encounter are from Mexico. There are a few definitions that are not Mexican Spanish. I can live with that, though. Overall, this is a very good product for a very good price.

This has been very useful for my kids in their dual language school program, particularly my first grader. Best for discovering vocabulary related to a topic, not great for looking up specific words.

I am old (I remember when the dinosaurs walked the earth and dirt was new!) and I am taking a spanish class. My instructor suggested that we find one of these 'first' dictionaries to use as well as a regular spanish/english dictionary. I am very pleased with this one. I like the way the words are grouped and that the verbs are sub grouped together. Once I don't need it any more, I'll probably pass it on to my grandkids! But I do recommend this, even to adults who are new to the spanish language, it's a great dictionary and I use it a lot.

Quality was perfect, shipping was timely, and price was good. My tutor in Guatemala had the book, and she used it with her students that are visual learners. Highly recommended.

Bought this to help non-English-speaking students easily integrate English vocabulary. Great pictures. Easy to use.

The only problem I have here is with the need to constantly be flipping back and forth in the book so as to see the proper pronunication guide for words.Having said that, it's still a really good book for the building up of a good basic vocabulary of Spanish.

It is a very helpful picture dictionary to work with kids.
